Klingon ship

The Axeman

Commodore
Commodore
Hi all, my mate asked me if I might think about churning out some original Klingon style designs, since there's a definite lack of models for them on the net. No end of Federation stuff, but hardly any Klingon adversaries. I pulled this out of my ass today...

Just doodling in modeler with this, nothing on paper and not as coherent as I might have liked. Once I've added a few more bits and pieces I'll freeze the mesh and begin adding detail. Right now though, it could all change tomorrow. It doesn't feel like a particularly big ship, probably a light cruiser or frigate.

Interesting. Looks like a bit of a blend between ENT and TOS designs.

Oooh, mean looking! Very nice. But to me (maybe it's the camera angle and the lens zoom ratio) it does feel like a pretty big ship. Maybe that's just because my monkey hindbrain is used to smooth-cobra-headed Klingon ships being battlecruiser-sized. Adding portholes and surface detailing will help set the ship's scale visually.

Well, based on the torpedo tube, the hammer head deck above it is at most 1 level tall. So, it's not that big.

Axeman, If I came up with an interesting Klingon design, would you be interested in modeling it?

To be honest I think there's much more of a 'market' for Klingon designs amongst 3D dudes. Plenty of people want to render battle scenes and animations, and there's very few models of the baddies. If you have an interesting design I'd be glad to have a look at it. No promises mind, but I do love seeing the latest Klingon stuff as it just looks much more interesting than Fed stuff now.

i think it'd be nice to see more fundamental klingon designs. almost everything seems to be derivative of the D-7 or bird of prey. even the federation "saucer/tube/stick" style has more variety.

Um ... about your choice of words and the idea of pulling a Klingon out of your ass ... I wonder if I was the only one wary of clicking the link.

EDIT TO ADD: Mind you, it's a solid design and quite nice. Just ... don't go into sales. Or greeting card writing.

Not a highly accurate choice of syntax and vocabulary, but a colourful one. If you cant be good, be colourful. Normally I'll have a damn good think about a model before I wade in, sketching out ideas on a pad before I actaully start model making. This one was doodled up in Lightwave, no real forethought. Or pulled out of my ass, whichever.

I'm liking this a lot. And, hey, Axeman, us movie era modelers need something to shoot at.

I agree, no point to a Federation if there's no one to protect people from.

Didn't get a lot of time today, but managed to improve the bridge area, thicken the wings and start new nacelles. May not get much done on this for a day or two due to real life, but I'll keep you up to date.

Pretty cool. :)

I don't know if I like those big "Engines" on the top; they seem a little large, even if it's supposed to be a small ship. Everything else it great, though.

Yeah, dont worry about those. They're going to get cut into and reduced. Originally i was going to make it a very large ship with a flying bridge suspended between them.

They make a certain amount of sense; I have no idea what Matt Jeffries intended those structures to be when he built the D7, but it stands to reason they'd be bulkier and less efficient on an older ship, whatever they are.

I want to have some elements of the smaller birds of prey, or at least allude to them, so I was going to make the upper portions somewhat like the radiator type structures seen on the BoP. The idea is that this is somewhere between a BoP and a D7 in terms of size.

Todays update, bridge structure improved and new nacelles built. Still pretty basic at this stage, just slowly adding detail and altering to suit the plan. Now I'm off to make a Star Trek F14, apparently.
