Kira Meru and Tora Naprem

cwalrus2

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I was just wondering if it would have made more sense for the writers to make Ziyal's mother (Tora Naprem) and Kira Meru the same person, which would make Kira Nerys and Tora Ziyal sisters. It would have been an interesting angle to explore. As it is, I think Kira Meru's and Tora Naprem's respective affairs with Dukat might have interssected each other making Dukat a very busy man since he had a wife and several children of his own. Of course, I wouldn't put it past Dukat to try something like that. He probably had more illegitame children out there with other women, but for the head of the Cardassian Occupation to have had several Bajoran mistresses when even one would have been scandalous in Cardassian society seems a bit of a far stretch.

As it is, someone had to hide Kira Meru's identity since Kira Nerys didn't know her mother's true fate until Dukat told her.

According to the chronology at Memory Alpha, Kira Meru died seven years after she was kidnapped in 2346, which would place her death in 2353, the same year that Tora Ziyal was born. I suppose it is possible that Dukat to have had an affair with Major Kira's mother for seven years and then move on to Tora Ziyal's mother. I just think it would have been an interesting twist.

Who else *but* the head of the Occupation would have lots of mistresses? (and I'm not sure I'd use the word mistress for their role. When your choice is slave labour or sleeping with Dukat...)

Aren't we told that her father told her that her mother died? Seems like an understandable lie... and one you wouldn't learn about. Who checks something like that?

I just think it would have been an interesting twist.

The whole thing is icky enough already. I like the dimension it gives the Kira-Ziyal relationship, but I can do without the Kira-mom-Dukat-mom-Ziyal links.

The new book Terok Nor Night of the Wolves gets busy with Dukat and his women. The authors try to make sense out of a lot of DS 9 backstory hints. Though there is the point that if you try to make sense of it all, it doesn't make sense. Dukat is in all three of the Terok Nor books.

I remember hearing that the DS9 writers thought of that angle and dismissed it as too soapy. I think they made the right call.

If you think about it, since Kira Maru lived with Dukat, she was kind of like his common law wife. And that would make Nerys his step daughter, and Ziyal Kira's step sister in a sense.

Specifically, Dukat had Meru killed because she found out about his affair with Naprem and their new child.
