Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy is becoming a TV show, finally.

Spike TV is developing a series with Game of Thrones producer Vince Gerardis, who has some experience taking epic words and putting them on the small screen. Taking a page from Game of Thrones, the series will likewise take its name from the first book in the series: Red Mars. And, as also increasingly common these days, the show will have Robinson, the book author, as a consultant.

Hopefully this time it'll actually happen. Way back in the day when the Sci-Fi Channel (note the spelling) was a good channel, they had plans to make Red Mars into a mini-series (and Ringworld, too), but those plans never came to fruition. But considering how terrible A Wizard of Earthsea was adapted, maybe it was for the better.

This is one of those things that could either be really good or bloody terrible. Eitehr way, I look forward to seeing how they approach it!

I'm thrilled to see this being developed, but a little skeptical about SpikeTV being the host network. It's not like a have a lot to base that on, but the way they canned the surprisingly good Blade: The Series reportedly because they didn't like that it had built up a large female audience that wasn't their desired demographic doesn't fill me with confidence. Of course, that was several years ago and every other cable channel is desperate to have their own signature dramatic series these days, so the environment has changed, but I hope the show does become AXE Body Spray presents: Red Mars: The Manliest Planet.

But the novels lend themselves well to the ongoing series format if they can maintain a decent budget for CGI shots and elaborate sets, so I'm hopeful about this.

This is great. While I bailed on the first book (for various reasons) I still found it a good read, so good luck to them, and hopefully Rendezvous with Rama follows...

I love The Wild Shore, The Years of Rice and Salt, and 2312, but I was left cold by The Martians (except the stories involving Roger Clayborne, one which predates the trilogy) and Galileo's Dreams, which tried to combine two different somewhat interesting stories into one.

This is one of those things that could either be really good or bloody terrible. Eitehr way, I look forward to seeing how they approach it!

I think I have that in my to-read pile. I'll give it a shot. I just finished 2312, and was horribly bored.

I think The Years of Rice and Salt is his best novel, followed closely by Red Mars.

Another vote for wanting to see the scene with the space elevator tether.

I thought the quality went downward as the series progressed but I loved Red Mars. Couldn't put it down.
