Killing Trinity sooner than later (Dexter)

What if Dexter had killed Trinity sooner rather than later (let's just say around mid-season) and while he was in the middle of disposing the body, Dexter is caught red-handed by Rita?

Just my opinion, I liked it just the way it was.

They dragged it out but they did it well because the villain was worthy of Dexter.

Compare that to season 3 when the villain (Jimmy Smits) was boring and witless.

^ I loved Jimmy Smits in season 3 his acting was simply superb. Infact Season 3 pushed it from a show I really liked to love and now its my top show on TV.

I like Jimmy Smits too, I just didn't like him on Dexter. I'm surprised you enjoyed season 3. Most of the Dexter fans I know almost dropped the show because of S3, myself included.

What was it you liked about it?

I loved the whole cat n mouse thing with Miguel/Dexter not too mention seeing Dexter open up to someone he doesn't know about his life. It was almost like watching a WHAT IF version of Dexter where what would of happened to Dexter without the Code...Also Jimmy Smits acting was wonderful.

Not sure how bad the fanbase recieved the season since ratings grew overall compared to season 1+2.

Well, I for one enjoyed Miguel Prado's arrogant attitude. Of course I could watch Jimmy Smits read the phone book.

Really, the best character in Season 3 was Chicky Hines.

I liked Season 3 as well, I thought it was a pretty good season, just a weak season finale.

As far as the topic goes. It certanly would have changed things between Rita and Dexter, but, i liked how it actually played out. Certanly is a game changer. I'm thinking the bigger What if question is actually what if it was Deb that caught him red handed, which I'm guessing we'll see eventually. Maybe not actually catchng him the act, but finding out somehow

Interesting scenario. If it had happened when Rita was still clingy and dependent, she might have decided to keep quiet for the kids' sake, and not left Dexter, despite being completely terrified of him.

But by S4, she'd become self-confident enough that I'm pretty sure she would have turned him in to the cops. At the very least, she would have taken the kids and scrammed. The only question is whether her loyalty to Dex might have trumped her general sense that the only moral thing to do is to turn him in.

Rita turning Dexter in isn't going to happen. The only alternative is for her to leave him, so killing her off accomplished the same thing in a more dramatic fashion.

The only "normal" person Dexter can come out to and have a hope of not being ratted out is Deb.

I liked S3 because the notion of contrasting Dex to a vigilante character who thinks of himself as a paragon of morality, and doesn't need to "hide" because he feels himself to be justified in what he is doing - a true megalomaniac - is an interesting premise. The real problem with that season is that Dex wasn't threatened to a great enough degree. In S1, he was threatened by the notion that he might become a "bad" serial killer without a Code. In S2, he was threatened with exposure and destroying those around him he loves. In S4, his worst fears came true. S3 really wasn't up to that level of intensity.

I liked season 3! I was frankly worried about how they could keep up the quality for a season 4. Trinity was a great foe and indeed topped Miguel as a pseudo confidant and adversary. Killing Trinity early would've meant doing what for the next few episodes? Rita finds him doing it and we spend a few episodes doing what? You don't resolve that 'reveal' with more marriage counsling. The OP premise is flawed without him further explaining "then what" cause mid season means 5-6 episodes left.

I think season 5 is going to see a more 'normal' Dexter. He and his Dad have said he can't have a normal life all throughout the series. Yet every season he does take steps toward normalacy. His co-workers continue to embrace him. Dating then marriage + now his own son. Those paths change one as much if not more than his 'dark passenger' would like.

They've already stated there will not be an over arcing season baddie so I take that as Anthology kills, perhaps the dark passenger even being denied passage more frequently as he deals with being Dad to Rita's kids and having an infant. Let's face it, pretty tough to sneak off and kill some thug with 2am feedings/changings? I forsee Cody&Aster at grandma's to allow Dexter some 'personal time'.

Is it really a spoiler to say Dexter kills Trinity? I think not.
Going into detail about how it goes down, now that would be.

Wow, I think totally the opposite. S5 is going to have Dex going more and more off the rails. He's gotta know that he caused Rita's death. He is too brutally honest with himself and too intelligent to hide from that reality with rationalizations. It's proof that his way of life is simply untenable.

His only reasonable move is suicide. But he's got Harrison to consider, and maybe Cody and Astor are still with him. And of course he wants to live. I don't know how he can resolve the situation. I think it's going to be like a sled ride down Mt Everest! :rommie:

Kinda. It wasn't a foregone conclusion to me that Trinity would die at the end of the season, though I thought it was likely, following the usual pattern of the series.

I liked season 3 too. I thought the first half of the season was pretty boring but it built to what I thought was an excellent string of episodes at the end. It was a slow burn.

Season 4 was better, though. Hard to top Lithgow.

Christ, I could not have handled Rita catching Dexter disposing of 3rd Rock From the Sun's body and then holding it over his head forever.

Dexter's going to be insane next season. Rita was the only one holding him together. Sometimes I think Dex is a superhero taking care of his sister, Rita, those kids and his job AND his hobby of killing people.

Next season will start with Deborah living with Dexter helping him to take care of the kids but Dex will be out on his own in the midst of a self destructive streak.
