Kids love Star Trek

Mirror Spock

Ensign
Red Shirt
I'm an elementary school teacher in New York City and on Monday I walked into school and overheard two students talking about how much they liked the Star Trek movie. They mentioned that their favorite character was the guy with the elf ears who wore a blue shirt. Since they were nine years old, I forgave the elf ears comment, only correcting them to say that he was a Vulcan. I proceeded to ask them if they wanted to see some more Star Trek at lunch time.

Yesterday, I watched "Arena" with three of my fourth graders at lunch. I was a little worried that they might think that the Gorn was too hokey, but they ended up really digging it.

Comments included: "I get it, the Gorn is really strong but Kirk is a lot faster..." and "Wow they're going to make Kirk and the alien battle to the death!"

I think I'm going to make watching Star Trek TOS with my students a regular thing at lunch. They entire first season is available to stream on Netflix...any suggestions as to which would be the next first season episode to show my students? Maybe "Shore Leave" or "The Squire of Gothos"?

Balance of Terror, definitely, with the Romulan connection.
The Naked Time (Maybe cover up the title to that one.)

Joe, terrifying when naked

The Alternative Factor. naw, just kiddin'.....................

MUST viewing for Fourth Graders:

Charlie X
Corbomite Maneuver
The Galileo Seven

How friggin cute are you and you're students!! I wish you were my teacher....I would of loved going to school.

I chose these ep's to introduce my nephew to Trek: Devil in the Dark, Space Seed, Arena and obviously troub w/ trib's....he's loved it ever since.

Just show them all of the episodes. That's about the age I was when I discovered TOS.

show them everything except And the Children Shall Lead. ;)

oh, and Breads and Circuses and Arena.

Show them TAS! When I was a kid, it thrilled me to death that they'd made a Star Trek just for *me*!

Well, "Devil In The Dark" is pretty cool and a little surprising, and even a little creepy. Good stuff.

The second season is actually easier..."The Doomsday Machine," obviously. And "The Trouble With Tribbles." One might think "Amok Time" a bit problematic, but come on - NBC Standards and Practices cleared it for family viewing forty freakin' years ago, and on the up side it features long sequences of two guys kicking the crap out of each other.

And, uh, indranee is one of the least dude-like posters here.

To quote The Who: "The Kids Are Alright!" :techman:

It must have been a great experience for a Trek fan, to pass this thing on to coming generations. Keep it up!

That's what it's about - passing the Classics on to the new generation!

My daughter's first Trek experience was watching "Balance of Terror" with me about 2 years ago on TV, and she's been hooked ever since.

One of her other favorites is "The Corbomite Maneuver", because she likes the baby Balok (she's now 8, but loves that!)

The ones that freak her out are "The Devil In The Dark" and "Arena" so far, just because of the aliens in those episodes.

My two year old boy is captivated by TOS and TAS - it's like a dream come true - finally another Trekker in the family!

He's too young to be scared of anything, the only thing that bothers him is the closing credits when he will usually say "Dadda - more Kirk!"

His favourite toy is a stuffed Spock teddy bear I picked up at the Vegas Trek experience - he cuddles it to sleep every night.

His birthday was last week, so we got him a TOS communicator with voices from the crew and flashing lights - he hasn't put it down yet.

...of course I never play with it :shifty:
