"Khan: Ruling in Hell" Sound Familiar?

I just saw the news item for new IDW comics, including one story showing what theoretically happened on Ceti Alpha V between Space Seed and TWoK. Um... don't we already have one of those?

Now, I can understand doing different versions of big milestones like the first or last adventure of the five-year mission, because there can never really be a definitive one of those (unless it's onscreen). But with something like this, I kinda think it's just a bit rude to do a retread of something that's already been thoroughly covered in a fairly recent novel. At least call up Greg Cox and ask him for permission to just adapt his story.

Then again, it's not as though I own Khan . . . .

I'll definitely have to check out these comics. It will be interesting to compare their version of Khan's exile to mine.

Thanks for thinking of me, though!

Well, Khan is the best-known villain in Trek history. It makes sense that IDW would want to do a Khan story.

He was frozen before Space Seed and dead after The Wrath of Khan, so pretty much all there is to work with is the period between SS & TWOK.

Unless they were to go for his origins on 20th century Earth. Which Greg Cox has also already done.

Still, I'm not enthused by this miniseries. Has IDW announced anything else for the fall? I don't think we have any idea what's coming after their current miniseries are finished, apart from the just-announced Khan series.

Maybe there will be some announcements at ComicCon.

You assume the IDW writers and editors read all the novels. Or do you expect CBS Consumer Products to start marking out lines of demarcation?

There have been several versions of what happened to Pike just after Talos IV, several versions of what happened to Saavik on Hellguard, several versions of what happened to the Female Romulan Commander after "The Enterprise Incident", two versions of how Ogawa's family turned out, two versions of Spock's marriage, and numerous incongruous depictions of the Mirror Universe.

IDW's comics should be banned from exploring any territory covered by Pocket's novels? Or only "recent" ones?

There's also the fact that comics and novels are aimed at distinct audiences, though they have some overlap, of course. A lot of the people who buy IDW comics don't read Pocket novels.

It's really the choice of title that makes it look a bit iffy, not the concept of a different take on the events...

Considering Khan quoting it in the episode when he was marooned, it is a fairly obvious title.

Exactly. "Have you ever read Milton, captain?"

As I recall, I flirted with the idea of titling my book THE EUGENICS WARS, VOLUME 3, but my editor shot that down real quick.

"Nah. It's Khan on Ceti Alpha V. You have to call it TO REIGN IN HELL."

"But isn't that a little too obvious?"

"Yes, but what else are you going to call it? Khan practically named the book himself."

"Good point."

I don't particularly understand where the hostility comes from. I never said anything about banning or lines of demarcation. You seem to be taking this kinda personally. :vulcan:

No problem. I appreciate you being indignant on my behalf, but, seriously, I'm cool with this . . . .

Can't wait to read the comics.

Well, good then. I should clarify, I suppose, I'm not saying it's "wrong" for them to do another Khan in exile story. I just think it would be funner if they did ground that hadn't already been trod.

Just my two cents. But it's nice to hear that you're excited about it. :techman:

I can see being peeved if I bought it expecting an adaptation of the Greg Cox novel and got a lesser version.

And he seems to have replaced Joaquin (Mark Tobin) with Joachim (Judson Scott). Apparently this will be treating them as the same person, whereas Greg explained Joachim as the son of Joaquin.
