Kentucky Derby Thread

PETA is going to be all over this one big time.

You know I asked the question if Animal Rights groups like this kind of thing to my roommate and he just stared back at me almost like it was a stupid question. I guess it wasn't.

Re: On to Preakness!

Bumping this for the second leg of the Triple Crown. Big Brown's not facing anywhere near the class he faced in the Derby; if he runs his race and comes through sound, he should have this one in the bag and we may have a chance at the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. He's going off at 1-2 to win it. Only one other Derby horse, 17th place Gayego, will be in the race today at 8-1. :bolian:

Latest news: Behindatthebar has been scratched, leaving a 12-horse field, with Big Brown starting from the 7 (6) post. Trivia: the 6th post has produced the most Preakness Stakes winners in the 133-year history of the race.

Other horses I'll be watching are Icabad Crane, becasue that's one awesome name, and Riley Tucker, becasue he's carrying Edgar Prado. Kentucky Bear has been training at Pimlico for over a week, so he should be the most comfortable on the track.

My guess is that if Big Brown wins today, we'll see an even lower level of competition at Belmont, given the racing industry's desperation for a Triple Crown winner to offset the recent tragedies in the sport.

Here's the line-up:

Post, Horse, Jockey, Trainer, Odds
1 Macho Again, Leparoux, D.Stewart, 20-1
2 Tres Borrachos, Baze, C.Greely, 30-1
3 Icabad Crane, Rose, H.Motion, 30-1
4 Yankee Bravo, Solis, P.Gallagher, 15-1
5 Behindatthebar, Flores, T.Pletcher, 10-1
6 Racecar Rhapsody, Albarado, K.McPeek, 30-1
7 Big Brown, Desormeaux, R.Dutrow, Jr., 1-2
8 Kentucky Bear, Theriot, R.Baker, 15-1
9 Stevil, Velazquez, N.Zito, 30-1
10 Riley Tucker, Prado, W.Mott, 30-1
11 Giant Moon, Dominguez, R.Schosberg, 30-1
12 Gayego, Smith, P.Lobo, 8-1
13 Hey Byrn, Lopez, E.Plesa, Jr., 20-1

An quick and dirty analysis of the field.

I just hope this race isn't as depressing as the last one was. Hopefully all the horses survive. That, and go Big Brown.

Wow, he wasn't even trying. If the jockey hadn't curbed him three times, he would have won that by 20 lengths.

eta: And yay for Icabad Crane, finishing in the money with his awesome, awesome name. :techman:

I watched Secretariat when I was a kid and those three races are indelibly burned in my brain. This horse is the next Secretariat and I never thought I would see his like again. I am so excited.

I was thinking the same thing after this race. I actually started this years triple crown by watching the Secretariat races on Youtube, and there is a lot about Big Brown that reminds me of that horse. I hope he can get it done at the Belmont.

^I've watched those races online, and the way he almost always came from dead last with a move in the first turn to win it was frankly amazing.

Derby
Preakness
Belmont (this is the one he finally ran Sham, a great horse in his own right, out by running with him from the beginning...)

Big Brown is more of a stalker, breaks better and sits back a few horses until the last turn. Unfortunately, we'll probably never get to see him run after Belmont, as he's been sold to stud already. I was really hoping to see him race Curlin who also likes to stalk and has a wicked stretch run...

And just for fun...Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral in the Pimlico Special :)

And, Secretariat is still the holder of the fastest time in the Kentucky Derby. No other horse has run it as fast, to this day. BTW: Secretariat's nickname was Big Red. - - Around the last turn the jockey must have just given Big Brown his head. There was a point there that he took. off. like. a. rocket.

^Yeah, he said he just crossed the reigns to let him know he could go. He said he never even used the crop. Then, he pulled him up when he saw he had an 8 length lead so as to save him for Belmont. The horse was still raring to go after the gallop out.

Why do I have this sneaking feeling that some horse out of nowhere will ruin the whole thing by blowing Big Brown away in the Belmont Stakes?

Because that's what always happens?

He'll probably get beat by a nose or something, like Real Quiet, who was coincidentally also ridden by Desormeaux... :vulcan:

Sportscentury did a documentary on Secretariat which part of it was on Youtube. I watched the races and then that documentary piece and I was in tears. No sport has brought me to tears as much as that horse and horse racing has.

As Liberal said this is what usually happens. That's what made Secretariat so special and spectacular. My daughter watched Secretariat's Belmont Stakes and her words were,"He totally OWNED." All three races in record time, and the Belmont win by some thirty lengths, I guess so.
