Kentucky Derby Thread

Well, the Run For The Roses is just 11 days away. Anyone have any plans to watch or attend? I'm having a few friends over and we'll get some tickets from the local OTB. Gonna watch it in all of it's 50" Hi-Def Glory.

Here are the current odds and favorites. I'll post my winner and combo bet predictions as we get closer.

***War Pass is OUT of the Derby. Injured. Nick Zito's colt sustained a minor leg fracture, probably at the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, according to ESPN.***

Ah, Derby time in Louisville! Lots to see and do.

A quick rundown for the non-Louisvillians: The festival officially started with a cold and drizzly but spectacular Thunder over Louisville fireworks and airshow show on the 12th and the opening of the "Chow Wagon" on the riverfront. This weekend offers the Great Balloon Glow and Race, and The Marathon/MiniMarathon which I'm sitting out this year. The Bedlam in the Streets Bed Race, the Run for the Rose', the Great Steamboat Race and The Derby Festival Pegasus Parade, are all on tap for next week. The Kentucky Oaks is the "Fillys Derby" and Oaks Day on Friday before the Derby is becoming an event onto itself for many Louisvillians who want the excitement of Churchill Downs without the hassle of Derby Day itself. Friday evening for those who do not have an invite to one of the MANY parties citywide can be spent celebrity watching at the entrance to the Barnstable/Brown Party.

Even though I live less than 5 miles from the Downs, I've never been to a Derby in all my 46 years. I've been to a couple of Oaks. I generally spend the day with family and friends enjoying the limelight that shines on our fair metropolis that day. Hope all that come or watch on TV have a great time!

Right now the two I'm finding intriguing are Adriano and Gayego. Pyro had a bad outing last week, but it was on polytrack, so that may have been a factor. He hasn't really been challenged in his past wins, with low speed numbers and splits, so it's a pretty open field. Eight Bells might have a chance from a decent inside post.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll be posting my picks shortly. Oh, have any of you ever seen "Let it Ride" with Richard Dreyfuss? It's a comedy about a guy who gets a tip on a horse and then has an unbelievable day at the track. I watch it every year the night before the derby. Highly recommended.

I always watch the Derby, and have Kentucky-type goodies on hand to eat and drink (Benedictine sandwiches, mint juleps, etc.). I love horses.

My mom is from Louisville, and my aunt lives there. My cousin's wedding reception is going to be at Churchill Downs (at the Derby Museum)!

^Ah, the seminal Gonzo article. Also, notably, the first collaboration between Hunter and Ralph Steadman. :techman:

Taking my standard policy for the Grand National and using it here, I shall pick the horse with the name I like the most.

Go Sierra Sunset! :bolian:

...a bit bleary eyed and a little bewildered,
I'll be taking my shot with longshot #14 Monba.

Good Luck! :techman:

^Me too. She's a 17-hand filly. That's a big girl. Plus, her race in the Fantasy Stakes shows she has some major heart.

Sort of also rooting for Big Brown, as he's trained by a scion of a Maryland racing family. :bolian:

Also, I never cunt out Edgar Prado who is riding Adriano. If I were a betting girl, I might throw a few bucks on him at 30-1. ;)

Will be interesting to see what happens with some of these horses like Colonel John that have only or primarily raced on polytrack as well.

It's hard to watch the celebrations after hearing what happened. Eight Belles had to be euthanized after breaking the two front ankles. That is just really sad. :(

*cries* Poor Eight Belles. Has something like this ever happened at the Derby before? :( I'm having a hard time caring about Big Brown after what happened. Damn. She was a beautiful horse.

Might want to edit that. :p

I'm really sorry to hear about Eight Bells. I was hoping she'd win. I really didn't want anything to happen like that.
