From Rolling Stone:
Keith Emerson, founding member and keyboardist of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and a prog rock legend, died Friday. He was 71. His bandmate Carl Palmer and the trio's official Facebook confirmed Emerson's death. TMZ reported that police found Emerson with a single gunshot wound to the head, though they could not confirm that Emerson died by suicide. "We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected," the band wrote.

So very sad. I loved their music, especially these two pieces:

One of my ELP favorites.. Fanfare for The Common Man (used during American football games in the 70s)

Crap he was really a pivotal artist in my youth..

Requiescat in pace

Oh, yes, Welcome Back My Friends...what an incredible song. I have great memories of listening to that, while lying on the floor, with my stereo headphones on.

OH, no...he/they gave us so much. And spawned so much more...

The dust motes rising as his fingers were blinding
I saw and heard his keyboard and its grinding
His epic chords and signature arpeggios
Launched the Band, and the others
Into Rock and Roll Legendhood

We got to see The Show
So much Rock and Roll
He was a Dynamo
But he had to go

Rock on, Mr. Emerson. You were Pivotal.

What a bummer.

Saw it on a Facebook in a post from Vangelis.

In rock circles the 3 names mentioned as the best keyboard players - Keith Emerson, Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman. Two of the have died in the past couple of months :(

Really sad news, a while ago he worked with Arjen Lucassen on the most recent Ayreon album, he dragged his Moog all the way to The Netherlands for it.

Edgar Froese is gone, Vangelis and Jarre aren't getting any younger, I hope that they and the rest of that generation will be able to stick around for a long while to come, the collective knowledge and talent they have are hard to find these days.

So sad :(. RIP sir.

One of my favorites by them:

A great loss- I followed them from the beginning and watched their music evolve. The original Moog synthesizers only produced one note at a time and that had to be programmed in- with jumpers at first. As equipment advanced he pushed the envelope constantly, but to create art, not some trendy show off pieces as a lot of keyboardists did.
Never saw them in concert but I do have on a DVD the performance where during a solo both he and the piano raised up int to e air above the stage and whirled around- never missed a note.

He was definitely a pioneer with the Moog and was also one the few people to own a Yamaha GX-1 (the synth seen in their performance of Fanfare for the Common Man filmed at the stadium in Montreal).

I haven't looked into but saw a comment over the weekend that this could have been a situation similar to Robin Williams. Think anyone who's followed Emerson's career would know it's taken a toll on his hands and he had serious problems. Apparently they had returned and the future prognosis was not good in the ability for Keith not to be able to play would be like Robin Williams without his wit and personality - emotionally devastating.

Rick Wakeman also posted how he would have loved to have recorded an album with Keith Emerson (knew him quite well and had jammed a few times) but the interference of 3rd parties prevented it (to the disappointment of both).

Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman would have been an awesome collaboration! Both with roots in classical but taking their styles in different directions, both adaptive and creative as hell..

I'm just gutted about this... have been for days... one of my biggest regrets, musically speaking, has always been that I never got to see them.
