If there is an emergency where crew are stranded or out of contact for a prolong period of time, I suspect that grooming won't be high on the list of priorities. If they find a quiet moment and suddenly feel the need, or looking for kindling, then I'm sure they could use a sharpened rock or medkit laser scalpel if it was very long.

"Set phasers to crew cut". "Crew, cut my hair." "What hair, captain, you're already bald!"

Even this guy was kinda well groomed, all things considered. A little messy? Sure.

Whereas this one had much more hair, but still a pretty well trimmed beard.

Tom Riker did have replicators for a limited time during his 8 years being stranded. So I'm sure he had a stash of necessary tools... including scissors. Plus the dude had nothing but time to waste literally learning laser etching skills. I'm sure he got plenty adept at cutting his own hair too

First rule of emergencies ... don't worry about your hair or beard. The state of either will not hurt you, and sometimes letting them grow will help. Once out of danger, you can cut at your leisure using your Bowie knife. ... What? Your emergency pack doesn't have a Bowie knife? Now you really have a problem.

By the 24th century I assume there are safe, basic pills to keep one's hair/beard growth under control and only to a certain point. By a similar token I assume Picard remains bald because it's trendy in that century for a guy to be naturally, genetically bald. Sort of a "natural" fashion statement in the 2300s.

There were probably artificial barbers who went out the airlock with Control. I wouldn't trust Control with a set of blades.

Steven, are you holding a dog, or a bear, or what in your avatar photo?

Oh, he's a dog, - an Australian Shepard that was born blind and deaf. He was born at the shelter from a mom that was taken from a bad breeder. That's him as a pup when we took him.

Please don't feel bad for him. He is able to act normally and enjoy life like any other dog, and he is my inspiration to suck it up when I feel like I might start complaining about some minor inconvenience.

I like to imagine that the flowbee is still around in the 24th century and hundreds of years of advances have transformed it into the pinnacle of hair cutting technology in the galaxy.

    Yikes!

Not sure I'd have the daring to use one of those.

Mine's a dual blade system with a "handle" roughly the size and shape of a baseball.

By all means, hair must be kept short... even in emergencies!
    ------------------------
I like to think that there would be no demand that males keep their hair short. It really would go against all the talk about the enlightened Federation. All the males having short haircuts, I take this as one of those many things we see on Trek that is there simply because it's TV and popular mass entertainment, that just goes with styles, up to a point.

    That's it.
I want Picardo back on the new show as Emergency Cosmetology Hologram singing Barber of Seville and cutting hair

Hair that keeps your space helmet from making a seal should be a no-no on the ships, so no long hair, no beehives, epic beards. You never know when you might have to suit up in an emergency.

In civilian life, sure. But in a space navy/military setting, they need to be cognizant of safety issues, like not getting self-sealing stem bolts entangled in one's long hair.
