The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson ended up not airing Matt Smith's interview last night (July 25) as originally announced. Instead, according to the CF website it's airing this Friday the 29th.

Karen Gillan is still scheduled to appear on tonight's (July 26) broadcast.

Karen's interview was so cute! She was just as kooky as she was the first time around. I wonder if that isn't an act she puts on because she seemed calmer during things like the SDCC panels and G4TV interviews and the like.

Some of my favorite moments (spoilers, I guess, if you haven't had a chance to watch the DVR or obtain this elsewhere yet. No DW spoilers, though):

- Remarking that the (almost there) dress she wore was something she'd bought in LA just that day, adding proudly "And I haven't washed it!"
- Catching Craig repeating himself when he starts asking about whether she's seen the Loch Ness Monster and she says "Yes...again!" (They talked about that last time.)
- She was planning to stay in LA for a few days after Comic Con, but hadn't figured out where she was going to stay. Craig offers her the couch. Apparently her No. 1 attraction she wanted to see -- The Magic Castle! (Referring to the magicians mecca down there).
- Karen does the Best. Awkward. Pause. Ever. And her collection of Craig Ferguson harmonicas continues to grow. (William H Macy got to take home the night's Golden Harmonica though because he revealed he could actually play one!) She ended up doing a harmonica/pause combo because Craig wouldn't let her take the third option of touching his golden ball.

The clip they showed was about 30 seconds of the God Complex trailer that debuted at SDCC. Wasn't actually a very good choice for spotlighting Karen, but then again we haven't been given too much to go on for the second half except for brief snippets.

Other than the choice of clip my only disappointment is Craig decided to "not go there" with regards to discussing what allegedly happened to Karen in New York last spring. I think they both could have had fun with that (I mean, come on, it was like something out of a Kevin Bishop Show* sketch, wasn't it.)

Fun stuff. Like many I'd love to see Karen and Matt on one of the bigger talk shows. But Craig Ferguson has a talking gay skeleton robot and a dancing horse and he makes his guests play harmonica after their interview. Leno can't touch that.

* SCTV-like UK sketch show Karen co-starred in before DW.

Saw it, too. One of the many reasons I like Craig Ferguson more than than the other talk shows is that he gets guests to just be silly and have fun. You get a much better view of someone's personality when their guard is down, rather than just hearing them repeat the spiel they've been taught to promote a film or series. Or worse yet, certain big-name interviewers who don't let the guests even talk, and the camera spends more time on the interviewer than the guest---one of the reasons I stopped watching late-night in general.

That, and the fact that he keeps a TARDIS on his desk makes him uber-cool in my book. :bolian:

Not just that, but go on Google or the DW fan sites and you'll find a growing number of clips where he's gotten big names to talk about DW because of it. Kenneth Branaugh and Helena Bonham Carter are the two biggest names I've seen discussing how they like - and currently watch (that's an important distinction) - Doctor Who. That kind of street cred is priceless.

^ Let's get Branagh & Bonham-Carter on DW!

I endured Ferguson again for Gillan, and it was worth it. She was charming-girly-kooky and the long awkward pause at the end with the harmonicas was funny.

Don't forget it's Matt's turn tonight!

Incidentally, Karen's appearance seems to have been shown the same day it was recorded. She mentions having bought that dress the same day - and she wore it to the signing at Amoeba records which would have been earlier in the day. I'm assuming they probably recorded Matt Smith's appearance on the 26th as well, since Ferguson went to New York to appear on Letterman the other night so I imagine they'd have shot a couple shows in advance. I think last time round it was mentioned that Friday shows are pre-taped anyway.

Ferguson's not everyone's cup of tea, but he's my favorite late-night host. If I want a "proper" interview I'll wait for CNN or Nightline.

The Matt Smith interview was great and - this comes as no surprise - Ferguson finally out and says he wants to be on Doctor Who! (He's got SF cred - he played Confidence in the classic Red Dwarf episode Confidence and Paranoia, which also sort of puts paid to his claim in the interview that he can't do an American accent!)

Good thing with this interview is that Matt gets it all to himself (well, except for Geoff). Last time round he had to share his time with that podcast guy (though the threeway awkward pause was classic).

Totally enjoyed it. Loved Smith beatboxing and his discussion of Rap. Also the manipulation of the time space continuum that allowed Karen's interview to air before she filmed it.

Yeah, that was one of the best things I've seen in a TV interview in a long time, and it fits well with Karen "subtly" reminding Craig that they'd already talked about the Loch Ness Monster.

I going to have to check out the Ferguson episodes that were taped in France that are supposed to air in a week or two. He left the robot skeleton at home and instead took Kristen Bell along as his sidekick, apparently.

Here is Matt Smith's interview:

The Intro is awesome

Great interviews... Have to say I thought that dress looked horrible, but that's just a personal taste thing..

I thought it looked very 60's, but she said she got it vintage, as I recall so..., otherwise It was unremarkable to my way of thinking.

Yes.. Very "Rosemary's Baby" Mia Farrow.. Completely unflattering. While she is very beautiful and attractive to no end, her little skinny legs just weren't complemented by it (IMHO)...

Helena Bonham Carter

Wasn't there a possibility that she would star as Idris in "The Doctor's Wife"? I can certainly see her playing the part, though I had absolutely no problem with Suranne Jones who I thought was just wonderful. Apart from the fact that she would have been great, the only real reason to get Bonham Carter would have been having a big name on the series.

As far as I'm aware there was never a plan to have HBC appear in the episode. And personally I see no similarity between Suranne Jones' performance and Helena as some reviewers have stated. The only similarity is on a superficial level Idris' costume kinda, sorta, comes off as a white version of what HBC wears in Harry Potter. Not a lot to go on there. I like HBC but she wouldn't have worked as Idris - you need someone who comes off a bit more wide-eyed if that makes sense, and HBC is too "wordly". That said, if they ever bring the Rani back, I'd knock on her door first. She'd make a great Romana, too.

Back to Ferguson, the France episodes began last night and I was happy to see he's taken his toy TARDIS along with him!

Re: Karen's outfit. I thought it was fine. I certainly didn't complain at the end when she stood up and they had a hug and I could almost hear a million frame captures happening around the country at the same time. She wore the same outfit at the Amoeba Records DVD signing event earlier in the day - a few images have popped up of her.

I still think her plan to visit the Magic Castle is one of the cutest things I've heard because you normally hear "go to the beach" or "go to Disneyland or Universal" - not "The Magic Castle". The only thing that would have impressed me more would have been if she'd said she was going to the Museum of Jurassic Technology.
