K-9 spinoff preview airs in the UK this weekend

The UK cable channel Disney XD appears to have probably set an all-time record for "short notice". According to the Doctor Who News Page, the channel has announced it will be airing a special preview of the Australian-made spinoff series K-9 this Saturday night.

The report isn't clear as to whether this will be a trailer or a full episode (which would see K-9 following the lead of the Sarah Jane Adventures which similarly aired its pilot as a holiday special months before the series itself began). And no I haven't heard anything about whether the show will air in North America.

The show looks interesting, and they got John Leeson back which is all I care about (that, and apparently the show does give a canon-friendly reason for why K-9 looks different). It's also an interesting experiment in that it's the first long-term spinoff not produced by the BBC (which may explain why they managed to make 26 episodes, instead of the usual 10 or 13).

As usual there'll be those who bemoan it for being too much of a kiddie show (as they do with SJA) but it looks impressive and if one approaches it as a kid's show and doesn't expect it to be another Torchwood, it should be fine. And if some folks really get offended by it as they are SJA, at least there's less chance of any crossovers or necessity to watch it unlike that one SJA story that was required viewing in order for people to understand all the references in Turn Left* (and this week's one featuring the Doctor, of course).

Speaking of SJA, it's just been announced that the show's been nominated for the BAFTA for best children's program for the second year in a row.

* Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane Smith, which introduced the Trickster, shown conducting a trial run of what later occurred in Turn Left.

I don't care if the show is "kiddie" (and I don't think SJA is "kiddie"), rather I hate the redesign for K-9. I don't have a problem with the need to resign, but I simply hate the design they chose.

That being said, of course, I'll check it out when it finally comes out, but I'll have a hard time looking past the redesign.

Yeah, the trailer has already been removed, but from what I've seen I know I won't like it.

The thing about SJA, it IS a kids show, but at the same time it's just more of a Doctor Who-lite. There's more children running around, and it can be shown on CBBC, but it's still Doctor Who, and can still be treated as a spin off.

What can K9 do for 20 odd episodes? I'm hoping it'll be revealed that it isn't our K9, but just another one that was built, or redesigned, because the new design for him looks fucking horrible. It actually looks like it's been Disneyfied.

I can't answer that fully without spoilers, but it's definitely our K-9.

From what I've seen the stories look frankly no more and no less extravagant than SJA. And we know they will be multi-episode (or at least 2-part) stories throughout, so I'd say the same answer applies as to "what can the Doctor do for 20 odd episodes" that applied to every season prior to 1984.

As for the redesign ... eh, it doesn't matter to me a whole heck of a lot. Only two things matter to me: 1. that John Leeson does the voice and 2. (And this appears to be the case) that the use of K-9 in this series doesn't prevent him from appearing in SJA. They did something really sneaky that I think allows everyone to win.

I would post what I've heard under spoiler code, but for some reason I can no longer get the spoiler code to work. :(
