Just watched 'Yesterday's Enterprise'

Well, there was a strain of fan mentality that cried out for "a fitting death" for Yar. What happened to her in "Skin Of Evil" would have been commonplace for more realistic dramas of the day - the way supporting characters might die on a drama like "NYPD Blue" for example - and that was probably GR's intent in this case. Trek is, fortunately or unfortunately, a kind of "moral comfort food" for lots of folks.

I thought Tasha's death in "Skin of Evil" was appropriate for her occupation and character. She died doing her duty, going first into a dangerous situation ahead of her commanding officer. Moreover, I found it far more dramatic than the assumed hero's sacrifice of "Yesterday's Enterprise" because it was so quick and unexpected.

And as much as I love "Yesterday's Enterprise", I loath what came as a result of it--Sela and her whole soap operish with a pseudo-science-fiction twist development.

I'm probably in the minority who didn't dislike Yar's "wussy" behavior in Q's penalty box. I've seen a lot of fans criticize her for that, but if an omnipotent asshole stuck you in a magic box and told you there's only room for one (i.e. you'd be killed instantly if anyone else got a "penalty"), I think most of us would be a little worried too.

Honestly, it gave Yar more dimension to have her express her frustrations and anxiety in that situation. One of the few moments when Yar was allowed to be a person and not a "character".

Shame Crosby's acting was awful in that scene, and the dialogue given to Picard was fairly vomit-inducing. I don't mind the sentiment behind the scene, it's just not terribly effective.

I just finished watching Yesterday's Enterprise on WGN Chicago. This is one of my favorite TNG episodes, even though Tasha Yar is in it.

A few observations:
- those white belts look really gay (even Queer Eye for the Straight Guy professionals would cringe!)
- I like the darker, militaristic look-- lighting, set changes, etc. IMO they 'got it right' for setting the war time mood
- I still found myself grinning at the continuity error in the last scene: although we are back to the normal timeline... Geordi is wearing the altered timeline uniform with black cuffs, etc.

Overall it is TNG at its very finest-- acting, sets, lighting, story... it all just works for me! A+ for this episode!:techman:

They got this perfect in Voyager!
