Does Kirk say that Kelvin ATTACKED a place on the edge of Klingon space? It sounded like it, even though I always thought it was attacked...and in the samse scene, why does Spock refer to Uhura as Lt then Pike refers to her as Cadet like 10 seconds later? Cheers.

No, they were attacked near Klingon space - and in the missing scene, Nero's ship is overtaken by Klingon ships soon after.

Saavik was a lieutenant and a cadet at the same time in ST II. A cadet is simply a person in training; they can be of rank and still be in training.
