Just saw the new movie in Bangkok

I got lucky and my best Thai friend won a contest on a radio station and won two tickets to the Thai premiere. Since so many people will express their opinions on this movie, I thought I would take a different approach and explain how the people from Thailand liked it.

But I can't. You leave the film overwhelmed. I didn't even know what I was thinking!

I do know a few things:

1. This IS Star Trek. And I'm talking every single element.

2. Excellent script with TONs of original Trek references/easter eggs, down to events happening that we have seen before in different circumstances, action sequences which appear to be filmed from very specific camera angles that we have seen before. We even hear musical cues from The Cage when the Red Monster rolls down the ice hill!

3. The casting could not be better. A huge surprise was the young Chekov. Simply amazing. Also, an extremely touching moment from the new McCoy in an interaction with Kirk.

4. The tragedy is on both a personal level and on a level which is overwhelming. I'm still sorting out my feelings about it. So far, it still hurts me more when Kirk had to sacrifice Edith, when Troi learned she had a sister she had never known, and when we lost Trip.

5. Many Thai people in the audience gave it a standing ovation.

There is a lot going on in this movie and it is long. Can't wait to see it again tomorrow.

Whew!

Thank you so much for sharing your mini review!

If what you say here is true:
1. This IS Star Trek. And I'm talking every single element.

I'm afraid I'm going to overflow with pride and cry a little bit...I really just may tear up a smidge..... but I'm going to try to hold it together. I got a lil teary when I saw the menagerie at the theater -- packed house -- we were all applauding.......and then...space, the final frontier... I just couldn't help myself.....

Saw it twice more today. The movie has a lot of layers and the additional viewings have only added to my appreciation for this film.
