I got lucky and my best Thai friend won a contest on a radio station and won two tickets to the Thai premiere. Since so many people will express their opinions on this movie, I thought I would take a different approach and explain how the people from Thailand liked it.
But I can't. You leave the film overwhelmed. I didn't even know what I was thinking!
I do know a few things:
1. This IS Star Trek. And I'm talking every single element.
2. Excellent script with TONs of original Trek references/easter eggs, down to events happening that we have seen before in different circumstances, action sequences which appear to be filmed from very specific camera angles that we have seen before. We even hear musical cues from The Cage when the Red Monster rolls down the ice hill!
3. The casting could not be better. A huge surprise was the young Chekov. Simply amazing. Also, an extremely touching moment from the new McCoy in an interaction with Kirk.
4. The tragedy is on both a personal level and on a level which is overwhelming. I'm still sorting out my feelings about it. So far, it still hurts me more when Kirk had to sacrifice Edith, when Troi learned she had a sister she had never known, and when we lost Trip.
5. Many Thai people in the audience gave it a standing ovation.
There is a lot going on in this movie and it is long. Can't wait to see it again tomorrow.
Whew!
