Just found out Gareth Roberts was on GB News...

...being given free reign to spout his transphobic garbage. Pretty much the full 'Russell is a groomer trying to turn children trans' bullshit.

(For people in the US that's like being on Fox News or Newsmax.)

I'll never understand how someone can be gay and transphobic but he's sadly far from the only one I've encountered with those views. (James Dreyfus, who played the pre-Delgado Master for BF until they dumped him is another.)

Oh, and if you've ever used the Time Scales review website either as a contributor or just a reader you might want to search out what the owner has been up to recently, or wait for the libel lawsuit that's surely on its way to become public.

The sad part about this is Gareth Roberts is a pretty good writer. Oh well, not the first time we've had to separate art from the artist, and it won't be the last.

I followed him on Twitter for a while but he seemed to be a deeply unpleasant person. I can often get on well with or follow people whose viewpoints I disagree with but he was just frequently nasty and mean to and about people.

IIRC, his transphobia first came to light around 2019 and led to his removal from a short story anthology that was published late that year. Prior to that, I don't think there was any indication he was particularly unpleasant.
His Wikipedia article says he spouted transphobic shit as far back as 2017.

Is it hard to not be a bigot?
Apparently.

He's someone I used to like, based on the stuff I'd seen him say about Who and his writing, but damn he's definitely gone down that Graham Linehan road. I stopped following him on Twitter years ago but still see some of his posts crop up in response to people I follow who are still connected to him, and just discovered he's written one of the short stories in a new Blakes 7 magazine coming out. Oh well as @The Wormhole says art/artist and it'll probably be the last 'new' thing of his I read between now and the end of time (always quite liked his Who scripts sadly)

Even before his transphobia became blatantly obvious he was very right wing on twitter, pro brexit and Boris but even more than that, the way he expressed his opinions and talked about people he disagreed with was always quite unpleasant.

I once disagreed, quite reasonably, with a point he was making about gay men and he instantly got very aggressive about it. I feel he has very set views about there being a right way to be gay and isn't interested in other viewpoints at all.
