Under $50 mill? In 3-D. They could do a good film on the budget but if they want to impress people with 3-d action scenes $50 mill ain't enough.

I remember the 1995 version had many scenes that were not action. Movies don't have to be loaded with action to be enjoyable.
Some movies can be done well with less money. Hell I'd like to see a film like Moon (which was done for $5 million) but in 3-D. Yes it was more of a psychological scifi film but still a cheap movie that was done well.

The original isn't that bad.

I can't believe I just wrote that, but it's true.

Everyone in it overacts worse than Shatner ever did, but I found it appropriate to the material.

I know a lot of people despise it but it's just not that bad.

I only hate it because I actually liked the comics.

I love the comics, and like the movie - it's not proper Judge Dredd (the Dirk Maggs radio adaptations are still the best!) but it's better than most Stallone pics.

As for this new version... $50m? In 3D? Fuck off - can't be done.

I think it just doesn't seem as bad after fifteen more years of movies far, far worse.

I still think Max Von Sydow was a whole lot of badass in that movie.

He IS the LAW! New DREDD film in the works.

In case no one noticed I'm a big Dreddhead And have always been p***off that Hollywood ruined a potentially great Franchise and made DREDD a joke around the globe, but now there may be some hope. :techman: Apparently it's now official...

From deadline.com
EXCLUSIVE The best way to get Cannes buyers hot and bothered is to come to market with a branded property that has potentially big commercial appeal, cool elements and a reasonable budget. Here's one that fits that bill: Andrew Macdonald’s DNA Films has made a deal with India-based Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global to finance Judge Dredd, a 3D film that was scripted by Alex Garland, and will be directed by Pete Travis, best known for Vantage Point and Omagh. The film will be shopped at the festival by IM Global, in the first collaboration since Reliance bought a majority stake in Stuart Ford's foreign sales company. While Judge Dredd is perhaps best remembered for the forgettable 1995 action film that starred Sylvester Stallone, Macdonald went back to the franchise’s DNA to completely overhaul the film and bring it back to its origins as the UK comic created by John Wagner and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra. Dredd is set in a futuristic world filled with violence, and the character is empowered to act as judge, jury and executioner. Garland's best known for writing the novel The Beach, and scripting the Danny Boyle-directed scifi film Sunshine and 28 Days Later. He also wrote the script for a movie version of the Microsoft game Halo that was scrapped by Universal and Fox. The budget's under $50 million, I'm told. This is the kind of project that you would normally find at a studio. This one looked like it would be done under DNA's deal at Fox, but that deal's going away, and Fox let this one loose :

It also seams Dredd's creator John Wagner is confident in this movie

So anyone else think they may get this right? Or with such a small budget Do you think the studio well just churn this out as a cheap BLOOD & VIOLANCE movie to make a quick buck? And why does every movie have to have 3-D?
CURSE YOU AVATAR! :scream:

Re: He IS the LAW! New DREDD film in the works.

I actually liked the Stallone version. Looking forward to this one too.

I liked the opening the music, but the movie as a whole is just ''okay'' they could have done so much better! I hope they look at Batman Begins as a template.

Re: He IS the LAW! New DREDD film in the works.

I'm not familiar with the comic in the slightest but I do have a soft spot for the Stallone movie.

Mainly because it's so fucking terrible that it's awesome. I almost hope they screw this up. I don't know what I'd do with a good Judge Dredd movie. :D

Re: He IS the LAW! New DREDD film in the works.

I think made in any decade other than the 90s, the Stallone version could've been really good.

The 90s were not kind to superhero/comic book films.

Same here, i quite enjoy the movie, the villain is nicely over the top, its got a big robot, its got a gun that repeats your commands "Double whammy", its got Max von Sydow, its got a flying bike, the music is great and too top it all off Ian Dury's in it.:)

A combination of Hollywood thinking comic book automatically equals "campy", and low budgets with only a modest expectation on return.

I liked Stallone's Dredd though, he certainly looked the part. I thought they did an amazing job with the ABC Warrior/Hammerstein puppet.

Here's an interesting quote by Stallone from Uncut magazine two years ago that I tend to agree with.

I loved that property when I read it, because it took a genre that I love, what you could term the 'action morality film' and made it a bit more sophisticated. It had political overtones. It showed how if we don't curb the way we run our judicial system, the police may end up running our lives. It dealt with archaic governments; it dealt with cloning and all kinds of things that could happen in the future. It was also bigger than any film I've done in its physical stature and the way it was designed. All the people were dwarfed by the system and the architecture; it shows how insignificant human beings could be in the future. There's a lot of action in the movie and some great acting, too. It just wasn't balls to the wall. But I do look back on Judge Dredd as a real missed opportunity. It seemed that lots of fans had a problem with Dredd removing his helmet, because he never does in the comic books. But for me it is more about wasting such great potential there was in that idea; just think of all the opportunities there were to do interesting stuff with the Cursed Earth scenes. It didn't live up to what it could have been. It probably should have been much more comic, really humorous, and fun. What I learned out of that experience was that we shouldn't have tried to make it 'Hamlet'; it's more 'Hamlet and Eggs'...

Re: He IS the LAW! New DREDD film in the works.

Good. I've never been able to bring myself to watch the Stallone version. Here's hoping they cast and actor who has enough humility that he's okay that the character never shows his face.
