It's always sad when somebody dies, but it just seems more poignant when that person brought us so much laughter. And so effortlessly. He was the embodiment of humor, a genuinely funny person.
I think I first became aware of Jonathan in 1963, when I saw "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" in Cinerama. A very cool guy. He had a comedy-variety show series in the late 60s and an aging Boris Karloff showed up for the Halloween show in one of his last appearances.
