From time to time Jesse Custer would have conversations about the universe with the ghost of John Wayne, which I always thought was just schizophrenia and probably why his mind was ready built for the thing that burrowed into his psyche.

So?

Jesse possessed the Word of God. Anything else is not only possible, but highly probable, including the ability to talk to disembodied spirits. God, I wish HBO had the balls to execute their once-planned adaptation of this series.

The Duke spoke to Jesse long before he merged with Genesis and acquired the Word, though. Ghost? Psychotic episode? Imaginary friend? Who knows? It's the Duke. He can do whatever he damn well wants. Even build an airport and put his name on it, if he feels like it.

I agree that the proposed HBO series had the potential to be amazing. That's really the best way to go with an adaptation.
