John Mollo, costume designer for Star Wars, Alien, The Empire Strikes Back and Outland, two-time Oscar winner and noted military uniform historian and author, has died at 86.
I don't think anyone has made a greater contribution to science fiction film costume. Futuristic but familiar, practical and understated, his designs had a streak of pure genius. Not as well known, perhaps, as Ralph McQuarrie, Ben Burtt or John Williams, but Mollo was also a key part of the team that George Lucas put together and was integral in making Star Wars what it was. Truly brilliant. Thank you, Mr. Mollo, thank you.
