John Barrowman in Desperate Housewives?

is this some sort of joke?

Torchwood star John Barrowman revealed today that he is to swap the BBC Wales sci-fi production for Hollywood with a part on Desperate Housewives. Barrowman revealed his career move in a phone chat on Chris Moyles's Radio 1 breakfast show this morning. "I'm off to Los Angeles on Sunday again," Barrowman announced. "I probably shouldn't say this but I've got a meeting with the execs of Desperate Housewives; can you believe it, I'm going to be a Desperate Housewife!" When Moyles's producer Aled Haydn Jones asked if he could come and hang out with him in LA, Barrowman replied: "You can come and be my lover, Aled!" Moyles wasn't having any of it, and instead asked if he could come and be his "roly-poly gardener". Barrowman replied: "You can be the roly-poly gardener or the handyman with the big butt crack." Monkey is guessing Moyles might somehow not fit in with the body beautiful edict on the ABC show.

Why a joke?

It could only be a guest shot though as he starts in "La Cage Aux Folles" in London in September.

well for the starters I am pretty sure I recall the producer of Desperate Housewives, saying no stunt casting, or big names.

How would Barrowman be either? No one* in America knows who he is.

(*Or a number so statistically small it's virtually no one.)

And I would bet that maybe only 10% of the ComiCon crowd actually watches DH... ;)

he has to have some sort of profile in the US, for them to consider him.

Still not getting your point.

Looking at the guest cast list for the series it's full of actors far far more well-known in America than Barrowman.

If you can fall over while unclothed, then you are perfect for desperate Housewives.

Comicon wavers around the million person mark, and the people following what happens through print, the net and word of mouth world wide would multiply that by an interesting number... That being said... I doubt Jack is the focus of but a tiny portion of the people at Comicon.

he's a just a guy how almost got to be Will, on Will and Grace because he was perceived to be to gay to play gay.

Nothing special.

so he is not considered "the star of the hit BBC Am series Torchwood"

Relative things. Big hit for BBCA is just another cable show in the TV wilderness. Also, I don't think JB gets a lot of face time in the US outside of Torchwood so unless you actually watch the show I don't you'd catch him in passing anywhere else (talk shows, magazines, etc.).

No, don't you get it? It's all part of a conspiracy to get sci-fi nerds to watch Desperate Housewives. Because, you know, ABC wants everyone, or something.

Well, that's my thin half-baked reasoning on this matter.

Barrowman is hardly a big name outside of scifi audience in America. If true, I hope it gets it. Might get Torchwood and Doctor Who more attention.

Aside from the fact that, as noted, Barrowman is not considered a big name outside the UK (in SF circles, maybe, but not the demographic DH aims at), assuming your remember is accurate it would hardly be the first time a producer has changed his mind. I seem to recall RTD changing his mind on a few things, too.

Anyway, it'll likely be just a guest shot, or perhaps he'll stay for a story arc. With La Cage coming up, plus encouraging signs for a Torchwood S4, plus the ever-present possibility of a DW return, he's got plenty to do in the UK without having to worry about relocating to Hollywood. Unless he gets that Captain America gig, of course! ;)

Cheers!

Alex

He was in The Producers but that isn't the biggest claim to fame one can hope for.
