Last night, CBC aired a two-hour TV movie about the man who became the first prime Minister of Canada, John A. Macdonald.
Although, to be fair, the story is about more than just Macdonald (played by Shawn Doyle, also known as Arkady Balagan in the series Endgame); but about many of the key players (such as George-Étienne Cartier and George Brown) in what was then the squabbling, deadlocked United Province of Canada, and what would become the modern provinces of Ontario and Québec.
The producer had hoped to create a series of four such films, each taking a look at a different chapter in the story of Confederation. So far, CBC have only plumped for the first; which shows the often-tortuous path taken to get the prospect of Confederation out of the political wilderness and into the forefront of policy, helped along the way by the long shadow of the American Civil War.
(Those of you in Canada who missed it can see it on the CBC website here.)
For my part, I thought the show was very well done, and hope we get to see the rest of the series committed to film sooner rather than later.
Anyone else have any thoughts on it?
