Joe Paterno status: Dead

CBS Sports is reporting the passing of longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. While his career didn't exactly end perfectly and we'll probably never know the true story of what happened with the Sandusky allegations and what exactly knew, I think he will still be remembered as a legendary coach. I'm thoroughly convinced coaching kept him alive.

Re: RIP Joe Paterno

RIP Joe. :(

I always said I didn't see him living more than 6 months after he left football, but I didn't expect it to be just two. Prayers for his family, and thanks for all the good work he did. I'll always remember being singularly impressed that the Library was what got the Paterno name.

Re: RIP Joe Paterno

This is sad news indeed. The man was a legend. At times, perhaps, his legend was greater than the man, but he was truly a giant among College Football. Really, a great figure. I'll definitely miss him and his family will be in my thoughts.

Re: Joe Paterno still alive; may yet start the zombie apocalypse

Sorry to see that it had to end this way.

" I'm not dead "
" 'ere! 'e says 'es not dead "
" he soon will be, he's very ill "

It happens so often, a guy's been at his job for so long, it might be the only reason he lived as long as he did.

Then he leaves that job and is gone just like that.

RIP JoePa.

Bear Bryant died four weeks after retiring as head coach of Alabama after the '82 season.

^ It's not just coaches. There's often a story about some guy who was at his job for 50 some years. The he retires and 3 months later....BAM!

Kind of sad that they can't enjoy their retirement, but guys like JoePa's whole world was their job, so retirement is like death to him.

I agree. When I was a kid, my family was friends with an old retired truck driver. He had a really good attitude and sense of humor and his retirement became filled with morning swims at the YMCA, long walks with his wife, trips to visit friends, etc. But he had stories about buddies of his that had retired, then sat around for a few months, and soon after died. Too bad. Too bad after all that hard work some folks can not see an enjoyable "new" life separate from their careers. Then again - as some have said- Paterno's job (labour of love?) kept him going enthusiastically into his 80s. Those truck drivers were gone in their early 60s. Sad to see that they -perhaps- felt that there was nothing sufficiently interesting or rewarding to keep them hanging around on the planet:(
