Jim Carrey as Freddy Krueger?

I think it's academic, as I doubt we'll see more Elm Street any time soon.

And even then, with Carrey's current attitude to cinema violence, I really doubt he'd agree to play a child killer/molester.

Hm. The Mask as a horror film rather than a comedy film...

That's how the character was originally portrayed in the comics (That was also how the film was originally going to be developed.)

In the original comics, The Mask is a crazed, violent lunatic. Once Chuck Russell came aboard to direct, the film leaned into the madcap, cartoonish Tex Avery route (Russell found the violence in the comics off-putting).

For which I am eminently grateful. And you nailed it by citing Tex Avery, although there's also an element of Bob Clampett (who directed Porky in Wackyland) and Friz Freleng (who directed the color remake, Dough for the Do-Do).

Tex Avery kept coming up over and over again during publicity for the film.

The still you posted kind of straddles the line between "sight-gag" and "eye-scream."

I remember, back when The Mask was out, my description of the movie was something on the order of "Jim Carrey's mild-mannered bank teller stumbles upon an enchanted mask that turns you into a Toon."

I mean, the original reason New Line wanted to do a "The Mask" movie was because they hoped it would become a new Horror Franchise after "Nightmare on Elm Street" petered out but changed their minds.

Probably for the best, because Slashers were out of style in the early 90s anyways and "The Mask" worked out better as an affectionate Parody of Superheroes

It's VERY Tex Avery.

I really would have liked to have seen a proper sequel to The Mask where "Big Head" goes up against Walter.
Triple H or Kane would have been my preferred choice to play Walter.

Well, actors tend to go through career reinventions all the time, so maybe this will be his. Robin Williams did plenty of dark movies later in his career. I think he might have even did a few horror movies.

One Hour Photo, Death to Smoochie, Law and Order: SUV to name some roles where Robin goes really dark.
SUV is one of the few episodes where the bad guy gets away and escapes retribution for his crimes.

Carry Krueger turns into a razor-shape Slinky and slinks down the stairs while people are running down it, slices them up into pieces while singing, "It's Slinky! It's Slinky!"
