Jem Hadar vs Odyssey battle

Wonder if the writers considered having the Odyssey shot up and destroyed rather than kamikazeed.

:techman:
That wouldn't have been as effective a demonstration of Dominion fanaticism.

True, but a counterpoint would be that showing 3 fighters shooting up the shining jewel of the Federation would have been more frightening.

Either way, worked pretty good.

One wonders whether Dominion weapons technology really was so superior that it negated Starfleet shields - or whether a Founder snuck aboard and fed the attackers the shield parameters, ST:GEN style...?

A fine fight in any case. And they did their best to make it look as if Picard was going down with his ship: Keogh's lines could well have been spoken by that more familiar skipper, too.

I love this battle.

Either way would've worked just as well, though I do like the Jem'Hadar ramming the Odyssey, it tells you a lot about who they are and what life means to them compared to duty.

I still remember seeing that for the first time. Definitely a "shit just got real" moment.

That was one of those "whoa" moments in Star Trek. I did LOL very loud when it happened.

I like the way they chose a Patrick Stewart semi-lookalike. There was a clear message to fans in that casting choice.

If they just had a bunch of fighters destroy a galaxy class ship, it would have told the audience "The Dominion is way stronger than the Federation". It would have made the Dominion scary. A kamikaze run destroying an Enterprise stand-in gives us a whole different kind of fear. "All the tactics of peace and negotiation that worked in TNG will not work against this enemy".

I would guess the reason that we didn't see it as much later in the series is that after reinforcements became unreachable, single ships became less expendable.

Given what the plan was by the Dominion you have to wonder if they weren't going easy on the Odyssey the whole time.

Considering the Dominion was either two or ten thousand years old (depending on which episode you watch), it's actually remarkable their technology isn't more advanced than it is.

They even reused stock footage of the Enterprise docked at DS9 in "Emissary" for the Odyssey.

And while ramming the ship was probably to send a message, that's probably not a standard Dominion tactic. They didn't appear to use it aganst the Romulan/Cardassian fleet in "The Die is Cast", nor most of the other battles we saw. The only reason we saw it used against the Klingons at Chin'toka was because the Jem'Hadar were vastly outnumbered and were buying time to get the weapons platforms online (as Garak and Worf pointed out).

Loved that fight, it was a holy shit moment and worrying how easily the flagship was beaten, even if it was a kamikaze run. I was in shock, too bad sisko's acting didn't convince me at the end.

The writers opinion is out there on this, they basically said they deliberately used the same ship class and a similarly impressive Captain as the Enterprise, to basically say "Picard would have been toast as well".

In universe, the engagement was a very clever one for the Dominion, achieving all their goals of: -

1. Give Starfleet a bloody nose to make a point.
2. Let the captives escape to get their agent on DS9.
3. Show clear technical superiority.

Now in the end, Starfleet very clearly made both their shields and weapons far more effective against the Dominion, so there was a lot of "shock and awe".

Also, pretty clearly without the suicide run, and without Keogh's (understandanble) decision to transfer power from his apparently useless shields to weapons, the Odyssey would have gotten away.

Well, the producers were given one of the Enterprise models, which were no longer necessary after Generations, and decided to destroy it. And yes, they did their best to make the Odyssey look like the Enterprise.

Except, oddly enough, for using the Enterprise-D bridge set. It's possible that the filming of "Generations" might've had something to do with that.

Didn't they destroy the D bridge while filming Generations? I believe the wreck set at the end of the film is the wrecked bridge set?

Yup. And they had to rebuild part of it and wreck it again since one of the shots didn't work - i think with Troi at the helm or something.
They probably just threw together a half-set, you don't see more than a few seconds of the bridge.
