Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

Very nice! I especially like that PII Ptolemy.

Nothing wrong with your creations JSnaith, but I think I finally figured out what bugs me about Jefferies' Phase II design: The outer surface of the Bussard collectors are flush with the surface of the nacelle. It just looks.... off to me. I may look at trying to tweak that design myself sometime.

Actually, they are ressessed, and not flush. I'll put up some renders later displaying that. But yes, it is very slight.

In terms of updates, I've decided not to build in shuttle bays on the PII Saladin and Ptolemy Classes. I have a nice officer's lounge set at the back of B deck, and I'd like to keep it on those ships. Plus, they are smaller ships, so they wouldn't share all the same abilities as the PII Constitution.

Today is a bit of a clusterfudge. Mum-in-law has taken a turn for the worse, so, yeah, that's my next few days. We won our case against the builder and got a full refund from the bank, so that's a plus, I can now start hunting round for a firm to build the "granny anex" for mum-in-law. My surgery has been delayed again because we're waiting on a particular surgeon to be available.

Does every ship class need a shuttle craft? Interesting question. With the Transporter system being what it is, do you really have to have a shuttle craft on every ship in the fleet?

Looking at real-world examples, ie the Navy: every ship in the fleet has the ability to "transport" crew to and from the ship (via launch boats). But only larger ships carry helicopters or aircraft ("shuttlecraft") of any kind.

Why would Starfleet be any different? With Transporter Tech, shuttles aren't a necessity on every ship, so therefore I am happy - in this case - to state that the Phase II Saladin and Ptolemy don't need or have them.

From a military perspective, every system needs a backup, especially in emergencies. We’ve seen multiple instances where some anomalous something-or-other disabled transporter functions, necessitating the use of a shuttle. Granted, it was a lame plot device in the show, but outages do occasionally happen IRL, and if they absolutely need to get somewhere, the shuttle would always be available.

And yet in the real world it's not implemented, as I highlighted before.

With tractor beam tech you don't need a super high ceiling for a shuttle bay. Rather than a full size shuttle
destroyers could have a few shuttle pods to have some sort of back up to a transporter being down.

I understand what you are saying, and yes, I could shoehorn something into the frame (where?). But I think my reasoning was good as to why I don't need to.

Don't change anything it can be hiding behind a panel that matches the deflector pattern. Somewhat like the exit port that Kirk uses to contact V-Ger.

Ok, it's done. Shoehorned in at the front of the saucer on the Phase II Saladin and Ptolemy Classes is a very tight shuttle bay. Given that those saucers have to fit everything else in for those ships to work, like engineering, fuel, et all, it is a lot of space to give away, but it's done.

Ok, so we're getting close to the end of another year, and it's time to take stock - and maybe spend some time away to enjoy myself.

Broadly speaking, I am still enjoying doing this. That's a good thing. I have lots of projects to finish, and a few ships to tweak.

But I think I need to stretch myself a little and do something I've designed. You've seen one of my unique designs (the Delphis Class), but what of the others? I've got shipbuilding down to a fine art. In fact, I've got it down to the stage where it's becoming too easy. I need a challenge.

So, I will be dipping my toes into my Trek creation soon. Nope, not going to take solicitations for ideas: I have plenty, lol. And this is the point, I need to build something that's mine.

Go for it dude!! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
I might get some blocking out done in the next few days, but I'm not going to rush. Have a name already, just trying to decide what era it should be... TMP? Lost Era? TNG - not really looking for it to be earlier than TMP, or later than early TNG.

Humm, I'm thinking late TMP/early Lost Era. Something experimental. Fun, that maybe breaks a few ground rules... or maybe redefines them? I'm going over some sketches I did in the '80s, real schoolboy stuff, lol, things I shouldn't have been doing when in class. Nostalgia is fun, yes? Of course, the nice thing is I can temper it against experience as a certified Trek Ship Builder.

Let's face it, after doing this for over 20+ years, I consider myself a certified designer and builder. Plus a certified nutcase as well :-)

Anyway, more on this challenge soon.
