Passed away due to heart failure on February 13th. Matsumoto was the creator of Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and many other influential comics and animated productions.
In the west, he may be best known for his collaborations with Daft Punk on music videos to their album Discovery, which were turned into the film Interstella 5555: The Story of the Secret Star System.

How sad to hear about this; his Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers) was one of the cornerstones of my childhood after Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (Battle Of The Planets), with both serving as my introduction to anime (Super Dimension Fortress Macross [ Robotech] coming later in my life in my teens.) I always wanted the model kit of the Yamato when I was in my teens, but I never got around to buying it. He's left behind a legacy of great creations, including Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999, and he'll be remembered for that by me and many others worldwide.

Rest in power, Leji Matsumoto, and thank you for what you've done; a squadron of Earth Defence Force fighters (from the Yamato) is flying a missing man formation in your honour.
