From the TrekBBS Rules:
Illegal Content: You can't post material that contains death threats, or invades a person's privacy, or is posted without permission of the owner. Obviously. Illegal content cannot be posted anywhere on the BBS.
-----
Intellectual Property: As a fan site for a television show, intellectual property is an important topic for us. We cannot legally or morally condone tape-trading in episodes or downloading episodes online, and do not allow discussions on this matter. Any other copyright violations will also not be allowed.
Yes, as fans, we do often use elements from material that is copyrighted in the creation of our own art - under doctrines of fair use, however, there is a certain amount of that that can be viewed as entirely legal and appropriate, and I try to be as fair as possible in interpreting that doctrine. Fans' art - not just property owned by CBS/Paramount or any other corporate entity, is also entitled and subject to copyrights, however, and using such as the bulk of one's own artwork, with only minimal modification, as in this example, goes far beyond fair use.
As for the 'rules' of the contests, they are largely up to the person who earns the right to make the challenge by winning in the previous month, but
this thread lays out a general framework, by member consensus, for how we should conduct ourselves and select our entries for the competition - in general, we've agreed that entries should be original works created specifically for the challenge, not just art we've already created that fits into the criteria for the month. Of course, there's leeway in there - the art challenges are pretty relaxed, in the interest of everyone having fun both as participants and as spectators - but in general, it's a good idea for everyone to compete on relatively even ground as far as the available time in which to prepare the art, and the spirit of the challenge concept itself - it's less of a challenge if all we have to do is post work we've already done in the past, possibly even for
other contests. We can't really police this, but we
do like to think of it in terms of the 'honor system.'
