January Art Challenge - S'kai's entry

...you are most welcome in these halls, thank you for entering!

Hmm. I'm not in any position to judge something like this but...is simply adding an element to someone else's artwork considered a valid entry?

^^I'd say it would be, unless Ptrope disagrees of course... he did cite the source. Heck, I've won with a montage of screencaps and text lol -- someone uses them in entries quite often. As long as credit is given I don't see an issue. :D

He may have cited the source, but did he obtain permission to use the original work? I know I personally wouldn't like my artwork to be altered and then entered under someone else's name.

It is of course up to Ptrope, but I was under the impression that these were Art Challenges. That piece is neither Skai's art nor do I believe that it was much of a challenge to accomplish.

I'm pretty sure the artist of the original piece is a member here, so maybe we'll find out.

It was posted in a forum marked Public, so I assumed no permission was necessary. I will abide by whatever standards are appropriate.

Regarding it not being much of a challenge, it's also not difficult to paint a couple of red, yellow, blue squares inside a bunch of straight black lines either. Some of us, however, would still call Mondrian's work art.

For that matter, some people crap on a paper plate and call it art.

It all falls under the "A 5-year old could have done that!" category. Yes they could have, and so could you, the artist just did it first.

That being said his photomanip is still more thatn I can do. :D

What is and isn't art has always been a matter of opinion and up to interpretation. However, I never said that the image in question isn't art. It simply is someone else's' art with a slight modification.

I also feel I should add that I saw this image on the OP's website last month, meaning it was not specifically made for this contest. Last time I checked, entries into the January challenge had to have been created during January.

Welcome to the forum, Skai, and you're also more than welcome to participate in the challenges. Before you do, however, please familiarize yourself with the board rules, and also the forum FAQ (pinned at the top of this forum).

Forum challenges are open to anyone, but you should create your own art - an original montage of other existing imagery may be acceptable, but simply pasting a couple of elements onto an existing piece of art - even your own - should be avoided. Doing so with someone else's art, even if it was posted in a public forum, is a definite violation of both the rules of the board and its spirit, as well; even if one has permission to use someone else's art for one's own purposes, it should be avoided in general, and specifically in the challenges.

I know I have been gone awhile, but how exactly is what he did violating the rules of the board or the art contest?

From the TrekBBS Rules:
Illegal Content: You can't post material that contains death threats, or invades a person's privacy, or is posted without permission of the owner. Obviously. Illegal content cannot be posted anywhere on the BBS.
-----
Intellectual Property: As a fan site for a television show, intellectual property is an important topic for us. We cannot legally or morally condone tape-trading in episodes or downloading episodes online, and do not allow discussions on this matter. Any other copyright violations will also not be allowed.
Yes, as fans, we do often use elements from material that is copyrighted in the creation of our own art - under doctrines of fair use, however, there is a certain amount of that that can be viewed as entirely legal and appropriate, and I try to be as fair as possible in interpreting that doctrine. Fans' art - not just property owned by CBS/Paramount or any other corporate entity, is also entitled and subject to copyrights, however, and using such as the bulk of one's own artwork, with only minimal modification, as in this example, goes far beyond fair use.

As for the 'rules' of the contests, they are largely up to the person who earns the right to make the challenge by winning in the previous month, but this thread lays out a general framework, by member consensus, for how we should conduct ourselves and select our entries for the competition - in general, we've agreed that entries should be original works created specifically for the challenge, not just art we've already created that fits into the criteria for the month. Of course, there's leeway in there - the art challenges are pretty relaxed, in the interest of everyone having fun both as participants and as spectators - but in general, it's a good idea for everyone to compete on relatively even ground as far as the available time in which to prepare the art, and the spirit of the challenge concept itself - it's less of a challenge if all we have to do is post work we've already done in the past, possibly even for other contests. We can't really police this, but we do like to think of it in terms of the 'honor system.'

Please withdraw my entry, I have no wish to stir things up here, and understand the rules. I will delete or edit my original post if requested.

No hard feelings. I did enjoy the challenge.

Since I only created this on January 7th, I can only say --

Fascinating.

I remember the thread, just not the consensus part, but if you guys have been operating like this then I fully support you. As usual thanks for clearing that up so eloquently as always.

As the original creator of the Borg battle image, I would prefer that people not copy my work and use it as their own.

I understand that Skai meant no harm by it, and I thank him for withdrawing this month.
