James Cameron spoke to press today at a special event to promote the November 16th release of the Avatar extended edition Blu-ray set. We'll have full coverage of the event soon but, in the meantime, here's what Cameron had to say in regard to future adventures in the world Avatar, his rumored Cleopatra project and the upcoming television series based on his 1994 film, True Lies.

"Our plan right now is to do two and three as a single large production and release them a year apart," Cameron said, "In order to do that, we have to refine our technical processes beyond the end of where we were finishing 'Avatar' one a year ago. We need to future-proof ourselves out five or six years to the end of the third film."

Does anyone else think Cameron should have left this at just one movie? This filming the sequels back to back thing like the Matrix sequels feels like a bad idea.

It wasn't a bad idea to film the Lord of the Rings movies back to back, so...

And filming both BttF and PotC 2/3 back-to-back gave us fantastic part twos...

I'd sure as hell rather revisit the Cameronverse than see a Total Recall remake... so I vote yes on more Avatar. :bolian:

I also thought of The Matrix when I read this earlier. And it does feel like another situation where the story's been told.

If one of the movies involved the Na'vi in human avatars, that would interest me.

Sure, why not, let's see more. I don't see Avatar as being remotely comparable Star Trek or Star Wars - there isn't some central unique identity that you can grab onto and expand upon indefinitely - but it's better than a poke in the eye with a stick, I guess. :rommie:

I think he can do what he likes and will when he feels the time is right. There isn't a deadline or anything imposed on him except maybe the cast but I'm sure most of them are locked up. It seems we could see Grace return in some form since he's hinted that death means nothing in comics why should it in his film or something to that nature. I like the fact that he keeps saying different thing about what his novel is going to be about. I'm guessing that it will be out sometime next year if it's actually coming out at all and now it appears that he will be directing Angelina Jolie in "Cleopatra".

Come on - you KNOW in 15 years we'll get "Avatar VS Predater VS Alien in 3D and Sensuround" and the fans will go wild (until they see it.) ;)

There wasn't enough story for ONE film.......why the hell does he want to make TWO more?!?
