James Bond given Carte Blanche

Last summer it was announced that jeffery Deaver (Lesley's and my favourite thriller writer) was doing the new Bond book, and the title and cover were announced in Dubai today-

On the one hand getting the likes of Deaver means it should be bloody good, but on the other hand it means that any thoughts of "hey, I can do better than Benson when he goes" are well-fucked, so that'd be an unfulfillable ambition then, if they're sticking to big name guest star writers.

They only got Deaver because a certain other author turned them down...

Rick Castle

You never know, they might not go with a big name author next time?

I just hope it's better than Faulkes' effort. Already seems more in keeping with the film series in terms of product placement if nothing else!

Fly Emirates, Bond does!

I've never read Jeffrey Deaver. I'd be interested in seeing what Lee Child could do with Bond, though.

With James Bond traveling as much as he does, you’d think he already has every credit card there is.

I'm looking forward to this, though I found Faulks' Bond a dull read. It'll be interesting to see how Deaver's updating will work out, whether he'll go out of his way to modernize Bond the way Gardner did, or if he'll simply decide to write the current movie version of Bond the way Benson more or less did.

I like the fact they're getting big names to write them now. This was actually the plan with the Robert Markham pseudonym when they got Kingsley Amis to do Colonel Sun. It would be interesting to see how someone like Paul Cornell or Neil Gaiman might handle a Bond novel...

I really liked Benson. I thought he was a great carry over after Gardner. When Benson was let go for the Teen Bond novel approach I abandoned the literary as well.

Now that proper adult Bond books are forthcoming I'll check it back out. I've not read anything by Deaver so I'll be going in unbiased, just expecting a good story.

I like also how the article mentions a brand new Sherlock Holmes novel will be forthcoming for the first time ever. The estate must really see what everyone else saw from the RDJ movie. That it's time to cash in with new literary tales for a new generation.

Just to clarify, he wasn't let go. As I understand it, Benson wanted to move on to other projects and stepped down. Ian Fleming Publications chose at that point to go a different route (which also involved putting out a zillion new editions of Fleming's books). And I initially thought Charlie Higson's Young Bond was going to be James Bond Jr 2.0, until I found out the books were being written for VERY mature young readers; the US edition of one of the books, either SilverFin or the one after, was actually censored to remove sexuality (the books started coming out around the time things like Gossip Girl and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials were causing parents' ears to turn red). So that made me reevaluate Higson. I haven't had a chance to read any of the Moneypenny novels yet.

If you want a painless taster of the Young Bond concept, SilverFin was adapted as a graphic novel that came out about 6 months ago.
