Jackie Chan, Commie sympathizer?

So he has an opinion that probably based around his own personal upbringing. Let him have it.

It seems like his position is based not on any grievance against freedom or a love for China's totalitarian government perse, but his opinion that China is largely unprepared socially and economically to handle it. I can understand the logic, but whether its accurate in China's case is debatable.

That's what I garnered from it as well.

IF that's true Then why did you say he's...
More of a facist sympathizer.
:vulcan:

Clearly, he's thinking in Humanitarian terms, although I disagree with his conclusions. His comments gave me the same sick feeling I get when I hear an American badmouth the United States. He should take more pride in his country and try to influence things in a positive way. And his comments about Chinese youth just describe the callow nature of youth in general; there's nothing special about Chinese kids in that regard.

But this just baffles me:

Jackie Chan said:
Chan added: "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."
That's the freakin' point, Jackie. ;)

Because what he is promoting is facism, not communism.

Since the government of China is commie in name only, then I guess they could be regarded as fascist by default. But Chan's attitude is very common. For many people, freedom is scary. People need to be indoctrinated with the idea that freedom is worth the risk of chaos for them to freely choose freedom over security. Human nature would naturally choose the reverse.

I'm not so sure about that. Historically, fascism has been an aggressive ideology that glorifies war and conquest. So far, the PRC has been content to remain within the Chinese Empire's traditional borders, and its military ethos has been largely defensive. Its one serious territorial claim has been to Taiwan.

It's difficult to put his comments in context, especially considering this a news article and his words have been chopped up into sound bytes. It's also very likely that these clips have been translated into English, adding another layer of potential for misunderstanding and lack of context. I'm not saying that he isn't taking an anti-democratic stance, but people should be careful before they judge him or call him a "commie" based solely on this "myway" news item.

My generally feeling is that this sounds more like social conservatism than a call for fascism.

As long as he keeps making fun movies like Rush Hour, he can sympathise with devil worshipers for all I care.
