I've started a web series...and have some streaming problems.

I posted this in the Sci-Fi forum, but thought I'd post it here, too, in case some people here don't traverse over there.

But anyway, I've finally completed the first episode of a web series of small shorts I've been putting together and it's up and live. There are a few glitches in it, focusing mistakes and such, due to it being my first time using a DSLR with interchangeable lenses and all that, but I'm happy with it.

I'd love to get everyone's thoughts on it. Constructive criticism, praise or thoughtful negativity is appreciated...but can we keep the trolling to the TrekBBS and not on the Vimeo board? ;) Haha! Thanks.

Hope you enjoy...

Oh, and by the way...I've been hearing that some PC's, possibly of the slower variety, have difficulty playing it, and that even when it's fully loaded, it is still extremely clippy. I have no problem viewing it, though I'm on a Mac. If anyone has these problems, can they let me know? And if anyone has a solution, could they chime in with that, too? :) Is it because it's uploaded in HD, and some computers just can't handle that?

Yeah, my crappy comp doesn't like vimeo. Any chance of a youtube version?

So is it a Vimeo problem? I seem to be able to play it on my Mac just fine, but on my PC netbook it barely plays at all, and I've heard the same thing from other people on laptops and desk tops. I thought Vimeo was supposed to be the premiere site for these sort of things?

I guess I will definitely put on YouTube as soon as I get a chance.

Watching it on youtube...

it looks GREAT. Great camera work.

But, a pet peeve of mine...the sound. The voices are SO echoy, so it sounds cheap. If it some thing you want to keep doing more of, investing in good mics, even a boom, would be a good idea.

Good work!

Yeah, the sound is definitely a problem I'm aware of. It was filmed on a DSLR with an XLR mic plugged in through a converter with an Auto Gain Disabler. It's definitely not the most graceful set up for good audio.

But I learned a lot about how to deal with it through the process of this first episode, so hopefully that will be cleaned up a lot going forward.

Thanks for your comments! :)

No problem. Good luck with the next one. Experience is a great teacher. And again, it looks really slick.

Thanks, Professor Zoom! I appreciate the compliments. There's a couple focusing errors in it, it being my first time filming with such precise lenses, but other than that I'm happy with how it came out visually.

We're shooting the next two episodes the first weekend of October! :)

Re-watching it, I think I spot the bits you mean, but if anything they add to the atmosphere if you're not looking for 'errors'. The focus-shifts add particularly to the environment I think you're going for with the PI's office.

It's funny that you say that...over the years in my filmmaking endeavours, I've realized that often the mistakes you make can become something significant or cool or stylistic in the piece.

In my edit, I was initially avoiding all the focus mistakes, then realized there were one or two shots that I had to use that contained these errors. I then went back and chose my favourite takes that I had discarded because of focus and put them back in the edit. I figured one or two mistakes are mistakes, but if done on particular takes at particular times, it becomes "style."

And it did kind of end up working in the end! :techman:

I just love the ebb and flow, in the moment, organic process of filmmaking. You learn so much every day.

Works just fine for me on Vimeo, while YouTube has been intermittently persnickety recently; having your clips available via more than one channel is probably your best bet. I had the same audio issue with the dialogue sounding boomy or muffled, but everything looks great. :) (Were those kudu horns?)

Take the jazz approach: was that a mistake, or was it an opportunity/invitation to expand on something? It's all in how you choose to look at it.

Be sure to let us know when more installments go up.

Those are kudu horns!

I definitely see filmmaking, especially the editing, like jazz. It's all in the improv that makes it special. :)
