Is Trek XI supposed to take place completly in a alternate universe? Is Spock from the "real universe" AKA the one that the rest of Trek as we know it is set in (except for the Mirror episodes, etc.)? I know they gave hints that would answer those questions, but I have only seen most of the TOS episodes once so I didn't pick up on all of the clues? In "our trek universe" did Kirk's father never die? Did Uhura & Spock ever get together? I definitely don't remember that last one from the show!

Anywho, does anyone know if the next Trek movie is supposed to be set in the alternate universe?

Is "our Spock" forever stuck in the past in an alternate universe? Perhaps we can have the next Trek movie w/ people from TNG, DS9, & VOY going back in time to save Spock??

Did the Romulus from our Trek movie really get enveloped by a supernova? That planet hasn't had much luck in the last two movies... first their ruling council gets assasinated & then the whole planet is destroyed. Poor Romulans!

It's a completely new start and an alternate timeline. I would think that old Spock would just remain stranded. If you poke around some more in this forum, you'll find some interesting conversations on just these topics. Have fun!

1) Kirk's father may have died, but we didn't hear of it. the important difference is that in the original timeline, as Spock mentions in the movie, he is alive to see Kirk enter Starfleet Academy at the right time (possibly, at 18) and become the Captain of the Enterprise.

2) Uhura and Spock did not "get together" in the original timeline, no. not even in the movies.

3) we don't know yet (other than speculation) what the next movie is going to entail.

4) from the dialogue in this movie, Spock Prime has chosen to remain in this universe and build a Vulcan colony.

5) Romulus does get destroyed in this timeline (in the 24th century) and in the original, Vulcan is destroyed in this timeline (in the 23rd century). I think there's some confusion/disagreement about this last point. check around the board for more speculation.

Your questions all depend on whether you accept that this movie is part of the Trek canon of the original 60's TV show and all the movies and sequel shows that came after it. If that's the case, then it's been generally accepted that the events that take place on the Kelvin up until the Narada shows up, and the events that take place in the 24th century (i.e. the destruction of Romulus) do indeed take place in the regular canon timeline, and all the rest of the movie takes place in an altered, parallel timeline created by Nero's and Spock Prime's influences.

However, when you get down to the nitty-gritty (which everyone here does), then you'll see that trying to shoehorn this movie into the existing timeline of the 60's TV show doesn't really work. It's like saying that "Batman Begins" is in the same continuity with the 60's Batman TV show. Even Nero's and Spock's influences can't rationalize the inherent changes this movie has with the original show.

That's not to say it wasn't an enjoyable movie, because it most certainly was.

Whoops... I just forgot about the obvious. This has to be an alternate timeline because Vulcan is destroyed and we see it in TOS, TNG, VOY, etc.... Can't remember if we see it in DS9 in any episodes.

We don't see Vulcan, but Sisko is visited by a starship staffed mostly or entirely of Vulcans. It's not necessarily implausible in this new universe, but I wouldn't bet on it.
