I've fallen and I can't get up...

Does it bother you as much as it bothers me, that starships don't have seat belts  Every time Voyager, Enterprise, Defient or other ships get hit by whatever, the bridge crew falls out down, out of chairs over rails...ect.
At the moment that you really need to be at your station, you're several feet away rolling on the deck, trying to get back to your station. I don't think they need a NASCAR type 5 point harness, but at least some kind or restraint would be good to have.

On a related topic, on Voyager if you look really close you will notice that several of the stations on the bridge have chairs that have wheels on them. Again, one would think that chairs would have to be fixed in front of the station, Any thoughs??

It's not even that they don't have seatbelts that bothers me, but they'll add in the restraints, like in TMP, but the next time they won't have them.

As for wheels on chairs, I don't know if this is related enough or not, but I was bothered by Generations where the ship crashed and the conn and ops stations themselves went sliding accross the deck on impact.

Cosmic thoughts?

but...but...if people are restrained then you won't have dramtic shots of stunt extras flying across the bridge in slo-mo!

plus, there's the fact that high-speed impacts throwing you against the restraints can cause serious internal injuries as well...

I believe the Voyager bridge chairs are fixed into a little trough thing (I don't know what to call it...groove?) so they are fixed in front of the station, but mobile within a limited range there.

As for the overall concern about seat belts, most situations where the IDF isn't enough leave you chunky salsa in an instant anyway, so I can imagine that the designers thought this was an unnecessary addition, or at least one not necessary to have installed or on display at all times.

I just have to ask to try and settle this question that is always being asked but do Navy ships have any type of restraints at there duty stations? You never hear about anything if whenever ships are out on rough seas or in a firefight that they need or have seatbelts. If a torpedoe or missile ever hit a ship then people are still going to be rocked out of there seats thrown over a rail.

This one was a result of how the E-D bridge set was designed - the Conn and Ops stations were 'wild' - removable, to let cameras and equipment in when they wouldn't be needed in shots. As a result, when it came to trashing the bridge, throwing them about was an easy thing to do. Often it's when the sets are "battle-damaged" you get to see how they really fit together by what they choose to move/smash/tip over.

I get that, but it looks like the most unbelievably stupid way to design a spaceship. When that ship is getting thrown around, the last thing you want is for those stations to fly accross the bridge! No wonder there's no seatbelts!

I know that characters are seen being tossed about, because of dramatic license and all that, but I didn't expect any of the shows (or films) to actually show seat restraints. Inertial dampeners would, theoretically, take care of that sort of thing. Any system which could prevent the crew being crushed to death when the ship accelerates, should do so.

What if you're in battle and you suddenly need to jump up and go somewhere, in the heat of the moment you might end up struggling to get your seatbelt off. Whilst you're struggling with you belt the ship ends up getting blown up.

What always got my goat was shuttles like the Runabout, when they pulled evasive manoeuvres they got thrown side to side. If they got thrown to the side from a simple turn to port what the hell happens when they hit warp or accelerate to high sublight speeds.

The 'why no seat belts' question occasionally crops up.

But, I've never heard anyone question why there is so much circuitry(?) in bridge consoles that feedback could cause them to explode and injure the user.

How would you feel if you knew your computer could potentially explode in your face?

Having no seat belts is one thing. Having no restraining straps of any kind for those huge boxes of cargo is completely unacceptable! (Look at Worf!)

Maybe so, but then they sure don't work worth a damn!
