ITunes is Making Me Crazy

OK, I took the bait and switched all my MP3 music to MP4s and put them into ITunes. I really like the Genius feature that makes music mixes (not counting Puddle of Mud / "She Hates Me" that my wife didn't understand). The troulble that I have is every time ITunes updates the entire library giving me duplicates every time. I tried downloading alternatives which wiped out the CD writing feature of ITunes. So, what I need to know is this, "Does anyone know of an ITunes replacement software program?" Darned MP4s. Any advice would be appreciated.

iTunes can play MP3s, you know.

I'm not sure why you would be getting duplicates. Do you have it set to keep itself organized? You could try turning that on/off.

There is a setting in iTunes. It either takes what you put in it and copies it over to its own library and plays it from there and you are free to throw away the original, OR, it plays the original from the spot where you have it originally. Those are the 2 choices.

And yes, it plays mp3s. You don't need to get a new program, you just need to figure out the settings of iTunes. :)

I use CopyTrans Manager it lets you manage songs on your iPod or iPhone without having to sync the whole damn thing.

Right, I know that it plays Itunes, but maybe what I forgot is that we share songs across the home network and I'm the only one with an IPod. Everyone else has MP3 players. I'd like to move the MP4s to MP3s, but I fear that may be impractical.

The iPod is an MP3 player. And didn't you say that your songs started out as MP3s before you unnecessarily converted them to MP4s? So why do you need to now convert them back to MP3s, just use the originals?

Sounds to me like you were the victim of some bad assumptions. :(

You'd have been perfectly fine leaving your MP3s alone. Both iTunes and the iPod can handle MP3s just fine.

That is a good way of describing it. Everything works good on the IPod Touch, but my wife has a Zune and that is where the issue resides. Fortunately, most of the stuff has come from CDs and vinyl anyway. So, it is just a repeat of effort. Running Tidy Tunes cleans the library pretty well, and I use Duplicate Remover as well to clean the library.
