It's Wimbledon, which means it's time to...

I'd give her a grand slam...

Wozniacki's pics are smaller, so to compensate, here's a video of her playing tennis in high heels.

Sharapova:

Enjoy.

Oh, BTW, mods feel free to move to Sports & Fitness if you think it's more appropriate there. It felt Misc-y to me. :D

I feel a fainting spell coming on... :D

Its wimbledon - oh yeah....note the sarcasm - its one of those sports i cant stand. And why do the women have to make that bloody awful noise? Sounds like a badly dubbed porn film.

When did female tennis players get so hot?! I mean when I was young the glamour girls were like Chris Evert and Gabriela Sabatini. Nice looking girls to be sure, but not exactly the supermodels who are running around today.

I just heard on the radio today that there is some talk trying to ban the grunting on the court, as so many spectators are considering the noise annoying & distracting:

Lion's roar 110 decibels
Maria Sharapova 101 decibels
Monica Seles 93.2 decibels
Serena Williams 88.9 decibels
Lindsay Davenport 88 decibels
Venus Williams 85 decibels
Victoria Azarenka 83.5 decibels
Elena Bovina 81 decibels
Anna Kournikova 78.5 decibels
Kim Clijsters 75 decibels
Elena Dementieva 73 decibels

I found the above comparisons on the DailyMail:

I don't know, though. These ladies are fine. I would probably only complain after receiving a significant amount of hearing loss....

and I though Wimbledon it's time for a Brit NOT to win it again.

That's just a given. :p

Anna Kournikova was the turning point, I think, when she proved that good looks, not grand slams, get you great sponsorship deals. Having said that, all three I picked are actually excellent players. OK, Wozniacki hasn't won a slam yet, but I can't believe she won't soon.

Talking of earlier generations, Tracy Austin does BBC commentary occasionally. There's someone who's kept herself looking pretty damn trim. She must be, what, mid-40s now?

It's always time for that.

As ever, the voice of cool, sweet, reason.

They talked about that when Seles first started it. That was the time to nip it in the bud. Never happened then, can't see it happening now, to be honest. It's embedded as part of the game.

Definitely Sharapova. I've been wanting to score some of her 30/LOVE for quite a while.

I say if making noise helps them focus their aggression into their play, or plays mind games with their opponents, then let them get on with it.

Honestly, who cares if some whiny spectators don't like the noise. They are just lazing around watching these people trying to achieve the biggest win of their lives under immense pressure. Oh, Oh, their poor ears.

It seems Serena Williams is throwing her toys out of the pram for being "forced" to play on Court 2. What a terrible hardship. If it's beneath you to play on Court 2 of 19, then just fucking default.

I have to say, I always thought she was more professional than that.

Makes you wonder how Martina Navratilova would make it in today's world. :vulcan:

Wonder how long it'll be before the issue of the Ladies prize comes up vs the mens prize.

As far as I'm concerned they can win the same amount when they play best of 5 sets, instead of best of 3.

^ Damn straight. Play the same game over the same duration, and then you've fairly earned the right to earn the same money. Of course, the decision is taken on commercial grounds, rather than equitable grounds, so other considerations intervene.

There was some subtext in her comments of the decision being sexist or racist, god knows which she was actually implying.

Definitely Sharapova. I've been wanting to score some of her 30/LOVE for quite a while.

She knocked out the last British girl, Laura Robson, today. Who, if I may say so, has the legs to become a damn fine addition to the ranks of pretty female tennis players as she blooms a bit more over the next couple of years. She will need to figure out how to use more conditioner on her hair though. :D

Wimbledon (and professional sport in general) primarily exists purely for entertainment purposes though. If it disturbs the entertainment value of the spectacle for enough people, it should be curtailed. Of course, there's a balancing act, because you want the best players to perform at their best, but Grand Slams are highly unlikely to be boycotted by players as the prize money and ranking points are so massive, so their organising committees have the clout to demand changes.

I don't think it actually will be curtailed, mind.

I think she would find the locker room a very pleasant place to be. :D

They do win the same now. £1.1m each, this year, for the singles champions.
