Is this the first time Bill Clinton declared the Drug War a failure?

"Former U.S. President Bill Clinton:
Obviously if the expected result was that we would eliminate serious drug use in America and eliminate the narco-trafficking networks, it hasn’t worked. […]
We could have fighting, killing over cigarettes if we made it a felony to sell a cigarette or smoke one. So we legalized it. If all you do is try to find a police or military solution to the problem, a lot of people die and it doesn’t solve the problem. [...]
I think there should be safe places where people who have addiction could come, and not think they’re gonna be arrested and will have basic needs met. I have experience with this including personal experience. I have a brother who was addicted to cocaine, so I know a lot about this."

I wonder if Fox would go after him on this. I am actually really suprised, but it kinda makes sense. This would be the right time for a former pres to do something like this.

Re: Is this the first time Bill Clinton declared the Drug War a failur

I been saying it was a failure for years. This war only benefits drug cartels, they are the biggest supporter of the drug war, makes them billionaires. Same with government and military. All wars, in recently history is just ways to make money and gain power. You make it where a man can grow weed in his backyard and not be harassed, you've won and are beginning to send the drug cartels out of business.....probably big drug companies, too....since weed can be used to help those with cancer and aids, and it's much cheaper than stuff like chemo, which can be like $17,000 a session....plus you fee like hell. Also, if we can ban weed and other drugs.....yet allow booze, cigarettes, and pharmaceutical drugs that cause more harm than good (prozak, avandia and viox to name a few), and allow nasty stuff chemicals and GMO's in our foods.......makes me say.....it's not to protect us, it's to profit them. War's a money maker, and a day of war is more profitable than a day of peace. Plus the prisons are crammed full of non violent offenders who used drugs (and their time in prison makes them, become violent....since yo gotta fight dirty just to stay alive on a daily basis in there, and avoid getting gang raped by either the other inmate or the wardens themselves).....and if a person can get arrested for drugs three times and spend life in prison, when murders and rapists can get out of prison in a short time.....makes me say something's not right. I say pardon all people on drug crimes and make room for the people who need to be locked away. Plus like Willy said, a person addicted should be able to get the help he needs without persecution or prosecution.

I say decriminalize drugs and tell those in power to go smeg off, because we pay the taxes and we're the boss, not them.....we tell them to do something and should hang their head in shame, say "yes, sir..." in a meek, mousy voice and go crawl away and do what we told them to do.....that's how it should be done. Let's stop this nonsense of the so called war on drugs and do something constructive.

The problem is that America's own brand of religious fundamentalists think any type of intoxication is evil and are enthusiastic opponents of any politician willing to tolerate an end to drug prohibition or even decriminalization of the less dangerous substances. It's a vocal subset of the community forcing their morality on a the less vocal majority. What's more disturbing is that intolerance like that is what drove many of the European colonists to migrate to North America in the first place.

The drug war is merely the USA's prohibition of alcohol during the 20's resurrected in a different form. You make something illegal then you make it scarcer and harder to come by, the drug users pay more and it only encourages criminals to come in to make a few easy bucks.

What does more harm to society than drugs ever will? Alcohol!
