Generative Adversarial Networks. A 2014 innovation in A.I and machine learning, one that generates content rather than simple prediction using existing content.

Thispersondoesnotexist.com displays an image of a person that doesn’t actually exist but is generated by a Deep Neural Network. Every time one refreshes or reloads the page, one gets a new “fake” person.

While my immediate thought was its uses in the entertainment industry, there seems to be more potential for abuse than use. What do you think? Scary, creepy, exciting?

I would have said "inevitable".

The writer of the article should learn the difference between "its" (possessive form of the third-person pronoun "it") and "it's" (contraction of "it is").

The human mind is not limitless -- see the Bekenstein bound.

It wasn't too long ago that A.I was in one of its winters. So pre-2010, if you had said "inevitable" for this kind of tech, it would have been laughable. All the strides we're seeing today happened in the last 10 years with deep learning.

And for grammatical slips, why, there's Grammarly which uses A.I!

The science of human cognition is underdeveloped. There's no scientific explanation for what most people in the world consider "consciousness" or "soul" etc. So I would hesitate to apply hard science to human consciousness.

No metaphysics. Something most people consider to be real, which science has no answers for yet. Unless you want to be totally dismissive about human experience because science has no good answer for it and labels such things as "metaphysics".

People are often delusional, especially when faced with their own mortality, perceived lack of success in life, or even just empirical evidence they can't accept. And, yes, souls are metaphysics (beyond the physical). Your soul, consciousness, or whatever might be an aspect of a quasicrystaline form in Hilbert or Fock space but that just sounds like New Age bullshit to me if there is no way to falsify it.

That may be true of some people at some times. Let's not say the entirety of human experience is a delusion, because then even science becomes a delusion because it is something invented by humans, for humans, of humans. Reality may exist with or without humans, but science does not.

Why are souls metaphysics? Who defined it so? And why? Because physical instruments couldn't detect it? What about the human instruments? If science doesn't have an answer to something, it immediately puts it under "metaphysics" or "delusion" it is no better than the God of the gaps. No explanation for something? Put it under "God".

Science is better off saying "I don't know. But I'm going to find out."

Your soul resides within the rather advanced biological computer inside you skull, your personality is a rather small part of it, if you don't believe me, just start running and collide with a concrete wall, tadaa no consciousness, as for the rest, everything is futile, come on, the entire universe will cease to be someday.. (so they say.) :p

If you want creepy images--do a search for deep dreaming

Computers can also make their own paintings--and music:

A general utility robot to do chores, on the other hand, looks very tough:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moravec's_paradox

"it is comparatively easy to make computers exhibit adult level performance on intelligence tests or playing checkers, and difficult or impossible to give them the skills of a one-year-old when it comes to perception and mobility".

I was hoping for the opposite.

Now for someone to get AI to do starship designs

The thing about AI right now is you can make it really good at achieving a specific goal with specific parameters, but you can't make it come up with its own priorities. (Which I suppose from an apocalypse standpoint is a good thing.)

Getting an AI to get really good at winning a game is a much easier problem than getting an AI that can generally adapt to unique situations. Hell, we might soon have an AI that can win an American Ninja Warrior style obstacle course, or even win at basketball. But one that can enter a changing world, make sense of it, decide what it wants to do with its life and come up with a unique strategy to achieve it? That's nearly impossible.

I think it's really creepy when occasionally it fucks up the eyes on one.

And then there's the occasional cloning...
