Is Spot a hermaphrodite?

I am not Spock

Commodore

When we see the cat in some episodes, it's a he. In others, its a she. Saw 'Phantasms' the other night, and we hear Worf's memorable 'I will feed him' line. A few episodes later, in 'Force of Nature', I clearly remember Geordi and Data describing Spot as a she.

Was Spot a shapeshifter, like Gary Seven's cat? Or just a hermaphrodite?

Geordi and Data both know Spot is female. Worf didn't know what sex Spot is, but the default personal pronouns in Klingon are masculine, so he said "him".

Spot could have also been the unfortunate victim of a transporter accident. :D The Trek Encyclopedia notes that in addition to the occasional gender gaffes, the actual cat species changed in different episodes. They're naturally very similar looking species, but not identical.

Worf killed the original when he was cat-sitting (maybe literally) and replaced it with a female.

Data, still missing some human concepts at this point, never thought to ask any questions.

There must be two cats. The first was a male cat, long-ish fur, slightly bushy tail. The second cat was female, with short fur. This is the one that had babies in season 7.

Perhaps the first cat died. We don't know. The second cat was also called Spot, in memory of the first.

Maybe Data's organic components turned out, to everyone's surprise, to be allergic to the first Spot, so they found him a good home, and the second, female, Spot was a hypoallergenic breed. ;)

In Phantasms Worf and Spot battle for hours, destroying Data's quarters in the process. Worf is curiously missing from the next two episodes.

Spot died a warrior's death.

I think it's just a case of the writers recklessly screwing with continuity for plot purposes. Spot was male and then someone decided it would be a neat idea to have him turn into a lizard and give birth to kittens in "Genesis". I like that episode (in a campy, guilty pleasure way), but I don't think it was worth screwing with continuity like that for. The lizard thing did help solve the mystery, but it was a pretty idiotic idea.

My friend Aleida has the answer. There was a mission. It involved time travel. The mission went horribly wrong...

But seriously, Data called Spot a "he" in Phantasms also. I can see how the cat they had to use for Spot could have changed over the course of the 7 years, but there really wasn't any reason to change the sex of the cat. They needed it for Genesis but otherwise I don't see a reason. They could have worked around it. I'm not sure exactly when they changed Spot's sex, if it was at that episode or before... Anyone else remember the first Spot-is-a-female reference?

Spot had already been referred to as a she in an earlier episode, Force of Nature.

It's clear to me what's going on here. What we're seeing are multiple timeline incursions from the Temporal Cold War.

At some point in the future, one of the factions decided that it can alter history for their betterment if Spot died. So, at some undisclosed time, Future Guy managed to get some Suliban into the twenty-fourth century. They boarded the Enterprise without being detected and killed poor Spot. This in turn sent massive shockwaves throughout history.

Temporal Agents from the thirtieth-century realized that without Spot there would eventually rise a Dominion-Borg Alliance which would crush all Alpha Quadrant species. So, they enlisted Seven of Nine to time-travel back in time to stop the Suliban.

Seven was unable to save Spot. In fact, she made the situation much, much worse when she assimiliated the entire Enterprise crew. The Temporal Agents soon realized they made a mistake in using "Season Four Seven" instead of "Season Seven Seven." So, they enlisted someone else to fix the timeline.

This time they turned to Garak. Now, a simple tailor wouldn't make for a good Temporal Cold War Operative. However, as we all know, Mr. Garak is no simple tailor. He was sent back in time to stop the Suliban from boarding the Enterprise and to stop Seven of Nine from assimiliating the entire ship. The only problem was that something went horribly wrong in the time matrix threshold, and Garak's natural Cardassian paranoia took control of his mind. Once on the Enterprise, he reconfigured the weapons systems to attack the Gorn Homeworld, which they happened to be orbiting at the time. This led to further timeline shockwaves, which allowed the Dominion-Borg Alliance to crush the Alpha Quadrant more easily.

Finally, the Temporal Agents realized that if they let this go on much longer, Spock would eventually be poisoned, which would cause the complete destruction of the multiverse. So, they travelled back in time personally to stop the Suliban. They also were unable to save poor Spot's life. However, they brought along a back-up plan, another cat. This cat happened to be female, whereas the original Spot was male. Thankfully, nobody ever noticed when they switched the new female Spot for the dead male one.

And so, the Alpha Quadrant was saved.

And now we all know why Spot changed genders. :)

Joking about which part? Liking "Genesis" or the reasoning behind Spot's gender change?

Just look at the visual evidence:

The bit where you worry about continuity because they changed the gender of Data's flipping cat?

I miss Spot. We never knew what happened to that cat after the descruction of the Big-D... (except for his/her survival)
