Is Sony's "split bet" on Ghostbusters another sign of a bad company?

Phantom

Captain
I just realized that my confusion over the status of the Ghostbusters franchise was because Sony is making TWO different Ghostbusters now, the fem-com "remake"/reboot, and the Channing Tatum-led actioner.

I can't think of any other studio that would risk brand confusion like that. Is this more evidence (after it's flailing around with the Spider-Man franchise) that Sony is just not competently run at the present time?

Is the Channing Tatum still even being discussed? 'Cause I can fnd diddly about it that is more recent than early March. (ETA see next post.)

No matter. From what I've heard, both films are apparently set in the existing Ghostbusters universe. I hardly see a reason to balk at two new films in the same continuity. I seem to recall something similar at Disney with Marvel characters. And Paramount had this little property called "Star Trek" where two shows ran concurrently, and alongside motion pictures set in an entirely different timeframe altogether.

Keep this line from the original Ghostbusters, when Peter Venkman is trying to convince Ray Stanz that their idea is worth getting a 3rd mortgaging on his family home to finance it: "The franchise rights alone will make us rich beyond our wildest dreams."

It isn't my money, so why do I care? I just hope for two entertaining movies.

No. The movie they are making right now is a do-over.

Unfortunately.

I've always thought that having two Ghostbusters movies going on at the same time was going to be a bad idea. Trying to essentially start a shared universe from the very beginning may not go over very well.

If at all. As said above I read Tatum in an interview saying that the film may not happen.

It probably won't happen, but that they even floated the idea publicly is not a good sign. It's tremendously silly and makes them look a bit bizarre, for sure.

The last I heard, they weren't going to pursue the Tatum version, which frankly is a good decision. Don't want too many cooks around the kitchen. I don't think the franchise is big enough to warrant two movies being made so close to each other.

I think Sony hiring Tom Rothman is a bigger sign that they have no clue what they're doing.

Not according to Aykroyd. He says "It [the new film] refers to the first two in a really neat, classy way". He (and Feig) have even dropped hints that Aykroyd may have a very brief cameo in the film as a retired Ray Stanz.

^ I think that would be a cool thing to have happen.

As for the Channing Tatum one - I hope it is cancelled. I really think that these two would hurt each other if both are released.

Unless they release within a month of each other, I'm not sure that they would hurt each other.

"Refers to" doesn't mean much. If the cameo happens I'll be very happy. But...

Paul Feig:

"And then I thought, well, what if we just make it new? It’s not coming into the world that existed before.

It’s always hard if the world has gone through this big ghost attack, how do you do it again? I wanted to come into our world where there’s talk of ghosts but they’re not really credible, and so what would happen in our world if this happened today?

I love origin stories. That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that.

So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler.

I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?"

Surely Ray Stanz is still just a kid in this new movie ;)

Jai Courtney will be too busy. He is playing Pee Wee Herman in a reboot/alternate timeline of the series.

Dan Aykroyd just tweeted this:
"ON SET OF GHOSTBUSTERS SHOOTING MY SCENE WITH THE FUNNY AND BEAUTIFUL KRISTEN WIIG. LADY GB'S are adorable, beautiful, hilarious, bad-ass and handle the new generation of ghostfighting equipment superbly. Exhilarating night!" ‪#‎ghostbusters‬ ‪#‎iaintafraidofnoghosts‬

Thanks for the spoiler, Dan.

I think everyone knew he would find some kind of way to be part of it, he probably waited in front of the gates for four days and nights in the cold rain until they took pity and let him in.
