Is SNW S3 really that bad?

Compared to the first 10 eps of S3 TOS or S3 TNG? I've been seeing post after post about SNW S3 being bad and well, let's do a poll. Discuss your votes below and how certain episodes influenced your vote.

I say it's better than S3 TOS's first 10 and even with S3 TNG's. Why is TOS last? ATCSL. SNW hasn't made a stinker like that so far. Looking at TNG, the worst one is Booby Trap. Geordi isn't very likeable.

No, it's not bad at al. Maybe it's not as good as SNW's previous two seasons, but it's still damn fine television and is as good as or better than the third seasons of all other Trek shows.

Personally, I think Three and a Half Vulcans is one of the worst scripts I’ve ever seen produced in the franchise. It feels like a filmed first draft.

It’s horribly racist towards Vulcans in its biological essentialism. It undermines La’An’s character arc of being more than her family name by saying her Augment DNA makes her inherently evil. There’s too many storylines that go nowhere and do nothing. Doug is introduced as a key character, but completely disappears from the narrative beyond a couple comedic scenes.

Terrarium (EDIT: and The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail) are the only episodes that nearly hits a 10, but the whole Metron shit at the end sours so much of the former. The rest of the episodes are middling to okay.

Season 3 has several great episodes and the season as a package was better on a rewatch but it's finale is just another episode and doesn't feel like a finale. It's a good episode but not a good finale.

Four and a Half Vulcans is still my favourite episode of season 3.

I'm not gonna vote in the poll because I don't think there's any way to make a valid comparison between the three choices, being products of three very different timeframes. I will say that I enjoyed s3 of SNW quite well, even 3.5 Vulcans. It may not have been on the level of the previous two seasons, but I really don't get the griping about it as a whole.

I would put The Selhat That Ate its Tail on the same level as Terrarium, but none of the rest of the season really fully hit the mark for me. The resolution to the cliffhanger was fine. Perfectly serviceable if a little familiar and nothing spectacular. I didn't mind the idea of doing episodes with Q or the holodeck, but they felt more like gimmicks than actual stories -- "Hey, look everyone! Look at the nostalgia button we're pushing this week!" The stories didn't really bring anything new or different to either of those established concepts, except maybe to apply a little continuity spackle, and were basically just sort of there. I was really looking forward to the documentary episode, but the final episode just fell a little flat. Batel's arc was just weird and featured some "Genesis" and "Threshold" level genetic nonsense (as did Four and a Half Vulcans).

And then their uncertainty that they were going to continue on beyond season 3 resulted in the rushed resolution of some story lines and ultimately none of it really seemed to gel for me. I still have high hopes for seasons 4 and 5. I'm reserving judgment on the whole puppet thing.

SNW season three is not the worst season Trek has produced.

But it does have three episodes in it that I doubt I could ever stand to even attempt to watch again. Plus one or two that aren't awful, but are fairly tedious so I probably won't watch again. (Okay, maybe once more in my lifetime depending on how long I live. )

So somewhere between a thirty-three to fifty percent dud rate for me.

I love all those, they helped save S3 from Lost In Space syndrome.

I'm a sucker for anything Jim Henson or Henson-esque, so I will probably enjoy the heck out of it unless it's awful.

Some of the SNW S3 episodes barely have proper five act TV structure. They repeat themselves, stretch out ideas, run out of ideas, and/or end not when the story concludes but when they run out of time. As bad as some of TOS S3 is, I don't recall any of them being that bad.

And I say this as someone who loved SNW s01 and s02: s03 is mostly stinkers*, worse than the other two poll options.

*Except for "The Sehlat That Ate it's Tail," a gem of an episode.

I like both, but I'd have to say the third season of TNG was better than the third season of TOS.

I haven't seen any of the third season of SNW.

I get it. I was mainly going by your thread title.

TNG and TOS season three's first ten epiosdes have some of Star Trek's most iconic moments. From TOS you have The Tholian Web, The Enterprise Incident, Day of the Dove, For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky, and (for better or worse) Spock's Brain. From TNG you have The Survivors, Who Watches The Watchers, Booby Trap, The Price, The Enemy and The Defector. Going in, Strange New Worlds already has a disadvantage. But of those 20 classic episodes from the beginning of TOS and TNG's season 3 that the poll inquires about, none of them affected me the way that SNW's Terrarium episode did. I have only twice in my adult life cried as hard watching ANYTHING on a TV or Movie screen: during the final moments of Terrarium, and when the Enterprise-D returned in the Picard Season 3 episode Vox. Both times I was sobbing uncontrollably, for completely different reasons. The storytelling was simply THAT powerful. So while I think TNG and TOS both had plenty of heavy hitters in their third seasons, I would never discount Season 3 of SNW. Because there are moments of that season which changed me as a Trek fan forever.
