Is SLASH fan-fic "real" fanfic?

While reading this thread, I realized I had already written a piece that was relevant to the topic. :D

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

Title: The Fanboy And The Shipper
Author: Whoa Nellie (whoa_nellie40@hotmail.com)
Filk
Summary: Some sage advice done in a filk to the tune of 'The Farmer And The Cowman'
by Oscar Hammerstein. This was originally posted to Trek BBS sometime in 2006 and won a 2006 ASC Award.

Author's Notes: For the mutilation of Rodgers and Hammerstein that you are about to read, Whoa Nellie sincerely begs forgiveness.

Acknowledgements: Paramount owns all the Star Trek marbles. The song 'The Farmer And The Cowman' is from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Oklahoma."

Feedback is always appreciated, posted or e-mail.

The Fanboy And The Shipper

Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
One writer likes to push a pairing
The other likes to chase a plot
But that's no reason why they can't be friends

Fanfic folks should stick together
Fanfic folks should all be pals
Fanboys dance with the shippers' pairings
Shippers dance with the fanboys' plots

Fanfic folks should stick together
Fanfic folks should all be pals
Fanboys dance with the shippers' pairings
Shippers dance with the fanboys' plots

I'd like to say a word for the fanboy
He came out to post and made a lot of changes
He came out to post and created a lot of techy advances
And posted right across our little romances!

The fanboy is good with constructive criticism
No matter what the shipper says or thinks
You seldom see 'im flamin in a shipper war
Unless somebody else is winning votes.

Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
The shipper has a character emote with ease
The fanboy creates the weapons and enemies
That's no reason why they can't be friends

Fanfic folks should stick together
Fanfic folks should all be pals
Fanboys dance with the shippers' pairings
Shippers dance with the fanboys' plots

I'd like to say a word for the shippers
The road they tread is difficult and wistful
They write fer days on end with nothing but wishing for a muse.

I sure am feeling sorry for the muse!

The fanboy should be sociable with the shipper
If they post an' asks fer feedback and critique
Don't treat 'im like a simpleton
Make them welcome in your forum
But be sure that you're not expecting any substance or a plot!

Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
One writer likes to push a pairing
The other likes to chase a plot
But that's no reason why they can't be friends

Ain't nobody gonna flame anything! This here's a hobby for fun!
Break it up ya fools! Alright, everyone, sing it.
Dum-dah-dee-um-dum-dum

Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
Oh the fanboy and the shipper should be friends
One writer likes to push a pairing
The other likes to chase a plot
But that's no reason why they can't be friends

And with this forum being a website
found on the net just like all the others
The fanboy, the shipper, and the lurker
Must all behave theirselves and act like brothers

I'll teach you all a little sayin'
And learn the words by heart the way you should
I don't say my fanfic is better than anybody else's
But I'll be danged if it ain't just as good!

Any Star Trek story that isn't officially licensed is fanfic. If a 5-year-old wrote a one-sentence story called "Mr. Spock Goes Poop", it would be fanfic. It just wouldn't be any good, much like the Shatnerverse. (Of course, if "Mr. Spock Goes Poop" were a Shatnerverse story, it would be called "James T. Kirk Saves The Whole Entire Multiverse By Going Poop". But I digress)

It all boils down to a matter of personal taste, really. The only kind of fanfic I'm personally interested in writing or reading is that which primarily features characters we've seen onscreen before doing things that we could reasonably expect them to be doing onscreen. I don't go for stories full of characters the author created. I don't like slash or really any stories that contain graphic sex and violence that we wouldn't see in an onscreen Trek (needless to say, I don't read or write a lot of fanfic). But that's just me. I'm not going to berate other people for their views. I'm not going to tell slash authors that their stories suck. I'm just not going to read them.

The Shatnerverse isn't That bad. He's come up with some stuff that certainly wasn't received well, but it was entertaining.
