Is Scotty to be the Gimli of this film

The Squire of Gothos

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I remember being slightly unimpressed with the comic relief effect of John Rhys-Davies' Gimli in LOTR, which seemed a little removed from the books.

Does Scotty, as played by the (pretty decent actor) Simon Pegg, seem to be heading towards something similar from the admittedly short appearances so far?

I got to say, I am a little uneasy with the idea that Scotty is being depicted solely for comic relief. In TOS, Scotty was a serious character who happened to also be funny. He wasn't solely comedic.

They have plans for him to grow into the role, I hope. He's a bit of a sidekick at first then his role becomes more serious as it goes along, I hope.

As for the OP question, I don't know.

if it is answered i suspect it will need spoiler code..
he though looks pretty serious in that one image with the crew all looking at someone.

Sadly, I think that Scotty is going to be a plot device and a source of pratfall-humor. Yes, just like our little testament to a dying race, reduced to midget jokes.

Scotty should be used as comic relief. He works best that way.

As long as he works miracles while he's at it, I'll be fine.

Yep...
If he's in there for at least some comic relief (hopefully not Jar Jar Binks comic relief), they're skating on very thin ice, running into danger of discrediting Montcomery Scott as a character and James Doohan and Simon Pegg as actors.

Hahaha... Midgets are almost as funny as monkeys!

Personally, I also prefer Scotty as we got to know him in the series. However, the abuse of his character as comic relief guy is not new. They did this to him in most of the TOS movies and to some degree in his episode on TNG. So since the 60s ended this guy has been at the butt end of the jokes. I would be very surprised if this suddenly changed.

I don't think he'd be used as comic relief personally. But I do think he will have more "comedic" moments just because of Simon Pegg, who is a naturally funny person.

Huh? Relics was pretty serious for Scotty, aside from the two scenes where he's rambling like an old man about his past adevntures to Geordi and that officer showing him to his quarters (and I didn't like those scenes). Maybe the scene with him and Data in Ten-Forward is kind of light hearted, but otherwise it's not really a comedic episode.

Or at least I don't remember busting a gut during the scene when he's on the holodeck recreation of the original bridge toasting his dead friends. Maybe you did, but I didn't, nor did anyone else I know.

I agree !

I always felt that for the first half of the episode he wasn't being treated with sufficient respect by the Enterprise crew. He was a Starfleet Captain and a legendary engineer, after all. They should have payed him the same kind of deference as they did towards Picard, if not more so. Worst of all was how the writers made him look stupid in engineering and Geordi's intolerence toward him. So, yes he might not have been a comic guy here, but they didn't take him very seriously either, at leat not in the beginning.

Scotty was a very serious character in the original series but he did have some funny moments but no more than any other character.

In the first movie he was his usual serious self and he was also serious in Wrath of Kahn.

The trend to a more humorous Scotty came in Star Trek III and after that he was used more for comic relief. Even when he wasn't being funny he was acting like he was always excited as in Star trek VI.

Sotty's personality changed so much through the years that by Star Trek VI he was almost unrecognizable (and I am not talking about how fat he grew either).

I hope we see Scotty in this movie have some humor but also be a serious professional.

I think it will make sense if the new film shows Scotty as a more light hearted, fun character. He is a young man, he will not become the ultra dedicated professional until later. I hope he goes drinking with Kirk, in a kilt.

That was the whole point of the episode. Captain Montgomery Scott was being treated as a RELIC of the past with no relevance to 'modern' time. Later the crew realizes that Scotty still has something to offer. It is my favorite episode of TNG.
