Is it worth it to purchase the Series on Blu-Ray?

This forum may be the wrong place to ask this question. I have seen every single episode of Star Trek (every series) via Netflix stream. However, now that I have completed my journey into where some but not all fans have gone before, I find myself yearning for more (such as the higher quality and commentary available on blu-ray). Yet, this would be quite an expense and physical media is becoming evermore obsolete. What ever should I do? I'm interested to hear this community's opinion.

Given that you posted this in General Trek, I have to ask...which Trek series are you referring to? The Original? TNG? Presumably not ENT...

In any case, assuming you have a set-up that can take appropriate advantage of Blu ray's A/V quality, I would say both TOS and TNG are worth the upgrade.

I am referring mainly to TOS and TNG. I'm also mainly wondering if the commentary/extras are worth the expense.

As with all commentaries and extras, some are better than others, but I don't think we're going to get anything better than what we have for the foreseeable future, and I found them worth the upgrade. That said, I have a 50" plasma tv and surround sound. I'm not sure I'd recommend them for a 20" TV and a mono speaker. :p

The documentaries and extra features on TNG and Enterprise are great; TOS is more of a mixed bag. The picture of remastered TOS really pops; the colors of the old dvds looked pale by comparison. TNG in HD? Quite excellent! And now that series sets are a lot cheaper than the individual season sets, I'd recommend them, if you have the means.
As for Enterprise, if you like enough of the show to justify purchase, the documentaries again make it well worth it.
But of course, I'd pick up every trek on Blu if they released them. Loved DS9, and Voyager... well, the show had it's moments for me.

Yes. TNG looks like it was made yesterday. TOS also looks very good for a 50 year old TV show. I have a 50" plasma too, and that helps.

Enterprise, in the widescreen format is amazing.

The extras, particularly when they get the full casts together, are brilliant.

I picked up TOS on Blu Ray for my Dad. He enjoyed them very much, especially the updated effects sequences.

If you're short on cash and patient enough to wait and see if TOS and TNG will get 4K releases, I'd wait until then.

I'd definitely recommend getting ENT on Blu-ray though, that will most likely never look any better than it does now. That series never got the remastering that TOS and TNG did making them suitable for UHD releases.

Just as most 4K UHD releases have been so far, 2K films upscaled to 4K.

What you'll find, is that people who know better will begin screaming. Just like they did when Blu-ray was in its early days and studios tried to pass off poor transfers as HD.

Most of the Star Trek films have survived this long with bad transfers ;)

But those transfers were actually done at HD resolution. To sell a movie that is mastered at 2K as a UHD release won't be good for the format. Especially early on when people are looking for something that is different from what they already own.

I like both BR sets a lot. The TOS set allows you to view and/or toggle between original and updated FX and the picture is fantastic. Realistically, it probably won't get any better. The extras are good, but not great. Many are leftover from the DVD release.

The TNG set is also excellent. The picture quality is clean and colorful and the show literally looks brand new. The updated / cleaned-up fx are very good.

IMO, I'd get TOS and TNG on Blu-Ray, but skip the films for now. The Wrath of Khan at the very least is due for a 4K UHD release by the end of the year. If that sells well, I expect the other five TOS movies to get 4K UHD releases as well.
