Is it possible to please everyone?

When I heard a new logo was going to be introduced, I knew exactly what was going to happen. Some people would love it, while others would be VERY vocal in their displeasure.

It's the same thing that happened in 2005 with the current logo. And probably back in 96 when they brought back Pertwee's logo for the TVM, etc. I know there were people who hated the McCoy logo from 1987 with a passion.

Anyway, the reaction to this got me thinking - is it possible for Doctor Who (and perhaps any franchise) to ever come up with something that pleases everyone? People are bitching about the choice of Matt Smith, the choice of his costume, the fact Karen Gillan and not Georgia Moffett became the companion, the fact the TARDIS is too blue.

And it'll happen again, guaranteed, when we hear the new theme arrangement and see the redesigned opening credits. There'll probably be people using these cosmetic elements as an excuse to stop watching (much as there were people who stopped watching (or refused to watch) Enterprise because of the theme song or the fact "Star Trek" wasn't in the title).

As I say, this is nothing new. I can just imagine the fights and arguments that occurred when Colin Baker put on his clown suit for the first time. And there are still people who refuse to accept the TVM as canon - the design of the TARDIS being one reason given. But because of the Internet these voices of displeasure seem to be louder and, often, more mean spirited.

I don't know if I'm going anywhere with this. This is more of an observation. Just once I'd like to see Doctor Who -- or any other franchise -- come up with something that actually gets universal (or near-universal) approval. I thought we'd had that with Blink, to be honest, but now I'm hearing people calling it a bad episode and using it as a basis for not looking forward to Steven Moffatt taking over. And despite Stolen Earth/Journey's End getting massive ratings and audience approval in the UK, there are some people treating it like Doctor Who's equivalent of These Are the Voyages. And The End of Time is definitely going to have the bashers out in full force no matter what happens, and heaven help Matt Smith if his first episode doesn't knock it out of the park (despite no Doctor in history ever accomplishing this on their first outing). So maybe it's not possible anymore for everyone to just enjoy what comes to them, because so many people think they can do better.

Nothing should ever get universal approval, and what a dull world it would be if things did. I'm looking forward to the Moffat/Smith era; does that mean I'm going to love everything about it? Probably not, hell I might end up hating it--I doubt it but you never know.

There's also a distinct faction who moan purely to wind up everyone else.

And like any sci-fi fandom, there are people who are far too anal about it.

And on the other side people who'll defend anything, no matter how shite it is.

I guess wars have probably been fought over less.

Personally I think the shit elements of Who are great, because they make the good bits gooder...I mean better!

You can't please all of the people all of the time. You're lucky if a lot of people are happy and pleased by what you do. For myself, I'm plesased if I like what TPTB are making and disappointed if I don't. People will always moan. I think the difficulty comes when people moan about stuff that other people like, or they moan about stuff that appears inconsequnetial to other people. I think that's when tensions arise. But people like and identify with different aspects of a show, and if it isn't being done the way they like it they'll voice their opinion. If the thing they are voicing their opinion about is something that doesn't matter to another person it can look to that other person as if there is inconsequnential fanboy whinging or nitpicking. It's the way it's always been.

No.

I just think it looks too clean, too new and too boxy. It doesn't old ancient enough or lean, like the current TARDIS prop. ;)

Nothing in this world that is not incredibly trivial ("kittens are cute") or incredibly obvious ("save infants from death") gets universal or near-universal approval. Not in politics, not in economics, not in industry, not in religion, not in academia, not in philosophy, not in science, not in business, and not in entertainment.

The bright colours are there for the shift to HD, which has a muting effect in post-processing.

I hope it mutes things a bit. It looks way too new and clean for my tastes.

Still don't care for how wide and boxy it is, though.
