When I heard a new logo was going to be introduced, I knew exactly what was going to happen. Some people would love it, while others would be VERY vocal in their displeasure.
It's the same thing that happened in 2005 with the current logo. And probably back in 96 when they brought back Pertwee's logo for the TVM, etc. I know there were people who hated the McCoy logo from 1987 with a passion.
Anyway, the reaction to this got me thinking - is it possible for Doctor Who (and perhaps any franchise) to ever come up with something that pleases everyone? People are bitching about the choice of Matt Smith, the choice of his costume, the fact Karen Gillan and not Georgia Moffett became the companion, the fact the TARDIS is too blue.
And it'll happen again, guaranteed, when we hear the new theme arrangement and see the redesigned opening credits. There'll probably be people using these cosmetic elements as an excuse to stop watching (much as there were people who stopped watching (or refused to watch) Enterprise because of the theme song or the fact "Star Trek" wasn't in the title).
As I say, this is nothing new. I can just imagine the fights and arguments that occurred when Colin Baker put on his clown suit for the first time. And there are still people who refuse to accept the TVM as canon - the design of the TARDIS being one reason given. But because of the Internet these voices of displeasure seem to be louder and, often, more mean spirited.
I don't know if I'm going anywhere with this. This is more of an observation. Just once I'd like to see Doctor Who -- or any other franchise -- come up with something that actually gets universal (or near-universal) approval. I thought we'd had that with Blink, to be honest, but now I'm hearing people calling it a bad episode and using it as a basis for not looking forward to Steven Moffatt taking over. And despite Stolen Earth/Journey's End getting massive ratings and audience approval in the UK, there are some people treating it like Doctor Who's equivalent of These Are the Voyages. And The End of Time is definitely going to have the bashers out in full force no matter what happens, and heaven help Matt Smith if his first episode doesn't knock it out of the park (despite no Doctor in history ever accomplishing this on their first outing). So maybe it's not possible anymore for everyone to just enjoy what comes to them, because so many people think they can do better.
