Is it best if i watch TOS before watching Discovery?

IronMaiden

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Been along time and i still haven't watched TOS, now that we know that the new show is 10 years before TOS should i watch it?

Now it is on netflix i'm sure it will be more HD now but i'm not sure if i don't watch the TOS it will take some of the jokes away or something like that.

I doubt it's essential to have watched any previous Trek shows. The producers want as much as anything to attract new viewers and an hour of fan-service is unlikely to do that.

Watch TOS because you want to see the roots of all these TV shows and movies and enjoy it for the same reason is my advice.

I'd always encourage watching TOS, but it's really hard to say when none of us has seen more than a teaser for Discovery.

If you're going to watch anything in "preparation" for Discovery, watch Enterprise - the events there precede those of Discovery, it will be fully acknowledged by the new show, and it's the same in all official Trek continuities. ;)

As far as what you "should" do, who are we to say?

Anyway, it's unlikely you'll need to know TOS in order to appreciate DSC.

However, I imagine rewatching TOS would be invaluable if you plan to complain about every single divergence from the 1960s show. "Those sets don't look like they're made from cardboard - you have ruined my childhood!!!!"

Watch it if you want to but it's not necessary, Discovery will stand on its own, no previous knowledge is required.

Given that DSC is being put into production a half century after the original and that the format of the show is going to be totally different (arc driven, serialized, short seasons), there is probably no need whatsoever to watch TOS in any sort of 'preparation' for the new show.

That being said, TOS is worthwhile to watch on its own merits.

With the recent news of Fuller saying it's based around Balance of Terror, it might be good to watch this episode at the very least.

It also might turn you off to Star Trek forever. ENT is a tough watch through season 2. And the Xindi arc from s3 almost felt like a shark jump. I'd say if you're younger, watch ENT first because you might need to see newer production values, otherwise watch TOS first then TNG, DS9, VOY, TAS, FanFilms, anything else, then ENT. That's my 2 strips (cents) ;)

Since it's all available on Netflix, just try them out and see. And ENT is not universally considered "the worst". I've been watching since 1973 and to me, ENT is 3rd (and some of it beats some of the lesser TNG episodes)--and no fan film comes close to any of the official productions. Best option is to view for one's self and decide accordingly.

For me Star trek is the original sereis and films with the original cast/or charecters,

None of the spinoffs have really beeb star trek to me!!!!

If this new series has any of the bravos or is as fervent as the original series it will be a first.
