The movie didn't look interesting to me so I passed on it. I see on rottentomatoes that it only has a 18 percent rating. It seems Lucas's only mission anymore is to live off the Star Wars name and sell crap merchandise to kids. So for those that actually did see it, is it at least watchable?

This thread in the Science Fiction & Fantasy forum has sort of ended up as the "official" review thread for The Clone Wars, so you may want to read through that for thoughts on the film. My thoughts are here.

I thought it was okay. Not a big enough story worthy of silver screen treatment IMO but hardly the death knell of Star Wars as many critics are saying.

I think most people who go to see it are going to be those who are already fans of Star Wars and simpleminded enough to actually like the original prequels, because with few exceptions nobody with taste is actually going to go see this movie, especially if they have to pay to see it in a movie theater.

Normally I like to couch my opinions about art in terms of opinions, and normally I try not to offend people, but when it comes to recent SW garbage I just have to say what I believe: even if 90% of people said they liked it, that would still be based on a sampling of people who would have gone to see it in the first place, which means a people who almost de facto have no taste to speak of.

If this offends you, all I can say is that I hate to offend everyone except people who would actually go see The Clone Wars and say they like it.

Yes.. it IS that bad.

Star Wars never was in the talks for a best movie/director/screenplay/actor/actress Oscar because.. let's be honest.. it wasn't really high art or the style where people can analyze the meaning of someone picking his nose.

However Star Wars had style.. it took as far, far away into a different galaxy to tell us a story and it did so with imagination, style and sometimes pure awesomness.

All this has been lost to heavy, gratuitios special effects scenes and low level humor that only appeals to kids because they haven't outgrown that style of humor.

Clone Wars is just the latest pinnacle since the new trilogy was released. I have zero doubt that it will be popular with kids and very young teens and this may be the only demographic Lucas aims at nowadays.

Of course this sucks for us adults who want our old school Star Wars continued but that apparently won't ever happen again (i'm quite pessimistic for the live action show after having seen Clone Wars).

So enjoy the OT, dissect the new stuff to death and Han Solo shot first!!! ;)

It'd good but not really good or great. It's made for kids 7-12 years old who like seeing cartoon shit blow up.

I saw it and really enjoyed it. Obviously, if you hate the prequels, then this probably won't appeal to you.

I'll admit that it was probably a mistake to release a project that was designed for TV on the big screen. The episode breaks are pretty obvious. If you can think of it as watching Disc One of a TV-DVD set on a really big screen, then the experience will be enhanced.

The thing is these people don't seem to get is that this is NOT Episode 2.5, nor is it meant to be, and thus is unfair to regard it by comparing it to the other SW films.
It seems quite simple; if you're really a Star Wars fan you should know about and have seen the Clone Wars cartoon from a couple of years back. And you should also know that there's now to be a follow up TV show, but this time done in CGI. You should also know they made the opening story as a movie-length special, and for the fun of it thought "why not release it in cinemas?" As such if you've seen the first CW series, you would know the sort of thing to expect from this.

So with all that in mind I can't understand how anyone who calls themselves a Star Wars fan can go around saying "Wow I was amazed how bad it was bla bla bla"
I enjoyed the CW cartoon series, and thus enjoyed this for what it was and what I expected it to be, no more no less.

If you liked CW what's the problem, and if you didn't why expect anymore from this when aware of the above facts?

Those overly criticising it are I expect the same 14 yr old uber geeks who can only get their rocks off by moaning like a baby saying gash like "oooh George Lucas raped my childhood, fuck you Lucas!" and other oh so mature comments.
Jesus, Give me a frakking break, get a life and get laid you because you're simply a joke

Ethros, it sounds like you are a bit uncomfortable with all the criticism of recent Star Wars stuff. Sounds to me like you might be covering up for something, telling anyone who doesn't like it that they should go get laid. Very defensive, if you ask me, and very telling.

Not really, I like Star Wars but I'm not some obsessive fan over it (to be fair thouugh I did feel like going on a little rant myself above)
I just don't the MAJOR criticism this film is getting. Ok its no Citizen Kane, but I've seen reviews by rabid "fans" who seem to make out Geroge Lucas came to their house, kicked the door down and raped their whole family and pets in front of them with a rusty chainsaw.
Overreact much?

I took my 8-year-old nephew to see it, and he f*cking LOVED it. He had the time of his life, ate about five tons of popcorn and candy, we stopped at the toy store on the way home and I bought him a couple of toys from the movie, and he ran around all afternoon pretending to be a Jedi, just like I did when I was his age. And I'm pretty much his favorite person in the world at this point.

THAT review was the one that really mattered to me.

As to the movie itself? Had I gone by myself, watched it with a critical eye expecting high art and compelling adult drama, I would have been disappointed. It's a kids movie, and so seeing it with a kid was just fun as all hell.

That's not true the original movie picked up 10 Oscar nominations.

Yeah, a lot of people have forgotten that Star Wars put George Lucas on a lot of critics' greatest American film director lists for years. I think this is one of the major reasons I was so disappointed by the prequels, personally. They just weren't that great or innovative in my mind.

A few points on the film:

1. It had more action than all the prequels put together

2) the effects..meaning vehicles and inanimate objects, were well-realized. Almost as good as the prequel films.

3. I'm not a fan of the stylized look of the people. Why not animate them but not exagerrate their features? I grew up loving G.I.Joe and Transformers cartoons, and while the animation was hardly fluid by today's standards, the characters were not stylized, they were, rather, drawn in proportion, and I could overlook the animation glitches and concentrate on the story.

4. The simple plot of the film worked to its benefit, such a relief after the overcomplicated yet half-baked and realized political talk of the prequels.

5) I had a great time. I'm 34. I imagine kids will have n even better time. Thoguh having a bowl of ceral would be appropriate for such a show.

6) Even though I liked it quite a bit, I do think that SW doesnt mean today what it used to. It used to be more special, and the details/ effects were always second to none. So thee was soemthing missing in all this.

7) I was fascinated by the strange way Anakin's apprentice weilded her saber. However her character actually was cool. She had more spunk than anyone in the prequel films, and therefore almost felt more real.

8) Ventress was bad ass, and I wanted to see more of her double saber

9) I could almost swear I saw clips or trailers for this film that had General Greivous in them. There is even a figure for him for the film. Where was he?

10) Padme was generally well-played in the film. Obi wan was too..eventually the voice actor sounded like him. The negotiations scene seemed to "cute" but I think kids will like it.

11) the First five or ten minutes were awful beyond all belief.

My 6 year old son loved it, and I think that because I was there with him watching him enjoy it so much made me like it more than I otherwise would have liked it. It really took me back to 1977 when I was 8 years old watching the original for the first time. Let's face it, the franchise will probably take a more kid friendly tone, at least for a while. I doubt that we'll ever see the nBSG treatment given Star Wars, at least not while Lucas is still alive.
