Ira Graves

Regarding the episode "The Schizoid Man".

The plot was supposed to be about Ira Graves transfering his consciousness to Data, although from what I gathered from that episode it was more like he transplanted his actual brain to Data.

Once in Data he should not have been able to feel any emotions since Data's positronic brain could not perform that function.

Also he should have had proper control over that body so there shouldn't have been any accidents.

And there was a hint that he had his human memory, when Picard said "I said we would Data". Implying that he didn't have android mental capabilities.

Sounds like a plothole that was necessary for the plot to exist.

Ah yes and on a sidenote if he was supposed to be the father of Soong's work like how old was he, 130....

Yeah it's a mess. But to be fair they didn exactly get everything figured out with anything in TNG until the third season.

Fater of Soong's work? Didn't he say he taught Soong everything he knew, probably wasn't too much older. And besides, he was egotisical misanthropic crank and those were Ira's good qualities. He was exageratting his work while dismissing Soong's.

I don't think TNG ever got everything figured out at all. It got a bit more consistent is all.

As far as emotions go, it was made quite clear (by Lore, and in dialogue by Soong later) that Data was physically capable of emotions, but was programmed not to experience them.

(Or, it seems obvious to me, to experience them differently... but that's a whole can of worms)

The losing physical control thing seemed reasonable to me, but if I were in his shoes, I might have just tried harder to learn to control myself... rather than download myself into the Enterprise computer. That's not going to end well.

In my mind, the biggest plot hole is how Graves has the knowledge to download his consciousness perfectly, but cannot recreate any part of Data physically. If they could have built another android body... none of this would have been necessary. Lucky for Graves that the one android he has an enclycopedic knowledge of, comes walking in the door as he's dying, and he just happens to be ready to try an experimental procedure...
So when Data's programming is pushed aside by Graves' "program", it seems reasonable to me that he'd experience emotion.

I don't see any plot holes, really. Surely a different software installed in the hardware would create different effects. If the software included emotional response, surely it could be expected to make Data's android body have one, too - especially when said response was nothing but the sorts of words and gestures that Data's body has been seen doing otherwise anyway. It's not as if Data suddenly started blushing or sweating or anything.

And Graves wasn't planning on uploading himself in an android body - his own bold plan was to upload into the clever computer program he had devised himself. Data's appearance merely inspired him to try something else, something that had not occurred to him before.

...And probably even if it had occurred, he would not have gone along with it in any other circumstances. After all, Data was the work of the rival Soong, thus way beneath what Graves could use with his dignity intact.

Those who knew him.....loved him.

While those who didn't know him.....love him.
