iPhone coming to Verizon, Sprint for 2011...

So the rumors are out there again, but it seems that it's stronger this time around, as employees of both have been told that "it's coming" once the AT&T exclusive expires in December.

Any Verizon or Sprint users out there going to switch to the iPhone? Any current iPhone users thinking of switching carriers if/when this does happen?

I'd get one, especially on the Verizon network.

You do know that sprint is better at this point, right? Better plan prices, true unlimited data, first live 4g network, beats or ties AT&T and Verizon in nation wide service coverage...

Plus, Sprint offers free voice and data roaming on both Verizon's and Alltel's networks. So anywhere verizon works, sprint does as well.

Verizon and the currently dying Alltel is all that is available in my area. I can get AT&T, but I'm not sure of how good the coverage would be in my area.

I wonder if there'd be a way to keep the same iPhone but just switch carriers? that would be amazing. Probably not, eh?

You should be able to do that. Although with the iPhone I think they need to add a chip or something because AT&T uses a different kind of network than the other companies. I'm not 100% of that though.

Indeed, there will be two different iPhone models, one for GSM carriers, which would be AT&T and T-Mobile (though T-Mobile may have some issues because of the frequency it's network operates on being different from AT&T/global standard) in the us and 99% of the providers world wide, and one for CDMA networks, which would be Verizon and Sprint as well as many smaller regional carriers and some carriers in Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean.

A third iPhone model is theorized to be rolling out some time in late 2011 which will operate on the WiMax 4g network that is currently live and expanding, though this may simply be a revision of the CDMA based iPhone, as WiMaax is sprint's 4g and sprint already has talked about dual 3g/4g phones. Such a set up could in theory provide a "split service" where data is handled over the 4g wimax network and voice over 3g. This would in theory allow for the same simultaneous voice and data usage that GSM is capable of that AT&T has been marketing the hell out of of late.

But the basic truth it that you will not be able to just switch service from AT&T to V or S, you will need to get a new CDMA iPhone...

How it seems that the carrier change is set to line up with the introduction of the latest generation of iPhone anyway, so it isn't like you are paying twice for the same thing.

From my internet sleuthing, I've seen July as the date of announcement of the new iPhone and new carriers, with some time in December as the start of sales for the new iPhone across the market. Dec 11 and Dec 21 are the most common mentioned dates for this, which would place it just in time for it to the the hot xmas item this year.

I find it hard to believe that Apple would devote resources to the dying CDMA standard. My money is that iPhone will remain GSM-only. We may see an LTE model this year, but I'm not convinced that a WiMAX or CDMA model is in the cards.

Apple has contracted a CDMA model from a different manufacturer than the current GSM based iPhone, that has pretty much been conformed at this point.

No, it really hasn't. These Apple rumors are less than credible, given the absoutely iron-clad privacy that Apple demands from its suppliers. Most of the 'confirmed' rumors about the iPad were debunked at launch, the front-facing camera being a prime example. We really don't know what Apple is going to do until Steve himself walks out on stage and pulls the black cloth off the next Insanely Great (tm) product.
